Carrollin kirjassa hahmon nimi on vain Hatter, ei Mad Hatter. Kirsi Kunnaksen ja Eeva-Liisa Mannerin suomennoksessa hahmon nimi on Hatuntekijä, Alice Martinin suomennoksessa Alicen seikkailut ihmemaassa hän on hattumaakari, ja Tuomas Nevanlinnan suomennoksessa Liisa Ihmemaassa hahmon nimi on Hattu Hassinen.

John Tennielin piirroskuvituksessa Hatuntekijällä on hurmioitunut ilme, iso rusetti kaulassa, iso silinterihattu päässä ja hän ryystää teetä.

Hatuntekijän esikuvana uskotaan olleen Theophilus Carter. Hän keksi vuoden 1851 Great Exhibition -näyttelyssä esillä olleen herätyskellosängyn, joka heitti nukkujan vuoteesta haluttuun aikaan. Myöhemmin hän omisti huonekalukaupan, ja hänet tunnettiin lempinimellä "Mad Hatter", koska hän seisoskeli puotinsa ovella silinterihattu päässään.
