Biography
a childhood among the bones.
Quote:
"why would i be afraid of death?" she asked, her brow furrowed. "are you? it's inevitable."
you suggest that maybe she is desensitized. after all, the ground beneath her, the place where she was born, is filled with bones.
"i don't think so. are you really afraid to die?"
you evade her question, asking if she were bothered by the burial process.
"i've been doing this my entire life. but look. this place is full of life. we plant trees and flowers over the mounds. we're all part of the cycle of life and death, constantly giving and receiving."
the place is truly radiant: towering trees through which sunlight filters, and masses of vibrant blooms. the only areas not covered by plantlife are upturned soil.
you feel a claw upon your neck, turning your face towards suri. her eyes shine with genuine curiosity, twinged with an expression of concern. "you're afraid to die, aren't you?"
well, why not? the unknown, the darkness, the afterlife--that uncertainty gnaws at the minds of the best of us. you throw your hands in the air and confirm her accusation. a puff of smoke issues from her nostrils, and a wry look appears in her eyes.
"you funny thing. there's nothing to be afraid of. we come and go. why should you be any different?"
--
that's what she had told him the day he meant to go. he was on tour, a wind general asserting his dominance and establishing alliances. yet he ventured to the Viridian Labyrinth not for business or war but for something far more intimate: the burial of his dead. home was a far-off prospect, and the dead were to be buried quickly, but with ceremony.
years later he told her that he knew of the burial customs of devout followers of nature from the servants of his family's summer home nestled in the Gladeveins. suri had wondered how a light green-eyed dragon had known something as obscure and hidden as nature's burial rite; nonetheless, she would not have refused a dragon in need.
he was compelling in a way that suri had never known before. his name was shu, and his eyes fascinated her, not only for their light color, flecked with black, but for a deep bitterness that dwelled beneath a confident facade.
