Biography
Eira
Matriarch | Guardian of the Caverns
Matriarch | Guardian of the Caverns
|
No temper to speak of Charge: the caverns (and the 'sprite' within) |
The one she was talking to said nothing, only reclined on a mushroom and watched her with concern in every line of her face.
"I have tried only to make a place where a Clan can live in peace, where anyone with good intentions can come and live without being harassed or hunted. I thought that I had collected dragons and Beastclan who were accepting and tolerant. How could this happen?"
Eira flopped to the floor of the cavern, the only place in the world where she would be so graceless. In front of the Clan, she was graceful, implacable, unshakable. She had to be. She had led them through a dissension (a peaceful one), a rebellion (an extremely bloody one), and now this. Even in the face of what felt like a dozen betrayals, she had been implacable and calm.
"I knew some of them for years," the massive Guardian continued, now on eye level with the sprite-like creature she was addressing. "How could I not have seen this in them? I trusted them!"
She was whining, she knew. She could hear the childishness in the soft echoes that shimmered off the absolutely smooth walls of her friend's cavern. Eira hated the whine in her voice, but she couldn't keep it out. And she knew her friend wouldn't hold it against her. The strange creature was her Charge, her guide, and more than that, her friend, her dearest friend besides her mate.
"There are shadows hidden on every soul," the creature replied, her voice soothing and calm. "You cannot see them all, not in others, and not in yourself."
"I should have seen," Eira snarled, angry now. The spriteling didn't flinch. She knew the anger wasn't meant for her, but for Eira herself. "I am their leader! I should have known, should have seen!"
"You gave them a home," her Charge replied. "A home many of them desperately needed. You let them build relationships and lives here, to have children here. It is not your fault that they had this shadow. Many of them did not know it themselves, I imagine."
Eira opened her mouth to snap at the spriteling again, but the creature raised a hand, and the great Guardian shut her mouth again, silent at the behest of a creature an eighth her height and a tiny fraction of her actual size.
"If it bothers you so much," the creature said, iron will in her voice. "Find one who can read emotions so that you can better gauge potential guests and residents. A Skydancer."
"A Skydancer?" The spriteling nodded. Eira thought about it, then leaned over to nuzzle her friend. "Thank you. I will do precisely that. When things settle."
