Precocious young dragons often come with doting parents, and Nyx was no exception. From a young age, she was an adventurous and outspoken, eager to share her budding talents with those around her. Her prowess with magic made it easy for her to surprise her friends and families with little gifts and tasks she knew would cheer them up, and she delighted in the accomplishment of a job well done upon seeing their satisfied faces. Nyx didn’t know a stranger in her small, tight-knit clan, and this, perhaps, was why she didn’t see the danger in boldly introducing herself to the first stranger she did meet, a wizened old fae witch who impressed Nyx with a sparkling bouquet of magically spun wildflowers and sweets dripping with crystallized honey that she drew from midair. Soon Nyx began to spend her days on the outskirts of her clan, learning magic from the mysterious old dragon, pouring over old texts and digesting the nuances of magical components. When her old friend offered to teach her even greater powers in exchange for helping her with a small ritual, the young dragon was only too happy to help.

The night was dark when Nyx snuck away from home to meet her mentor in the field outside of the clan’s borders. Wet grass brushed her ankles, and the chill of the night made her shiver, though that may have also been due to her anticipation. Her friend was waiting for her on a rocky outcrop, all smiles, clearly eager to begin. Nyx helped to draw runes that she had not yet learned onto the rocks beneath her feet, nearly wiggling with excitement at the thought that soon she too would have this knowledge. What would she do with it? She was sure she could create some truly splendid things as her arcane abilities grew. Standing in the middle of the circle with the fae, Nyx held a large candle in her claws, dutifully repeating words in a tongue she did not understand. It was only when a chill clawed at her very throat that she realized she had never asked what the ritual was for, too trusting of the witch, too sure she was being kept in the dark so that she would be let in on it as a surprise. It wasn’t until blackness stole her vision and a roaring shout boomed through her mind that she realized something was horribly, horribly wrong. Around her, purple wisps began to glow, taking the form of dragons, or, something like dragons, dragons gone horribly wrong, with too many limbs, too many empty eye sockets that should have held the light of life but instead held nothing but vile blackness. Nyx’s voice died out as the shapes began to converge on her. She could smell their stinking breath, could feel the rattle of their bones against her sides --- and then she saw nothing at all, everything whiting out as a roaring voice boomed through her mind.

“STOP!” the voice bellowed, and all went silent.

When Nyx woke, she was alone in a field of dry, brittle grass, though it was still the height of summer, long before autumn’s chill would have caused this. The runes around her were scorched and charred beyond recognition, and the witch was nowhere to be found. Some might have considered themselves lucky to be alive, but Nyx carried in her heart the weight of truth. She had not come from this unscathed. Whatever the fae had used her for, it had angered the gods themselves. She had felt it, had seen it lift and toss her tiny body through magic she could not even begin to comprehend, and her punishment had only just begun.

It happened in stages. At first those around her just seemed more accident prone. Her friends got more bumps and scrapes when playing. Her parents were more likely to drop a dish. She tried to tell herself it was coincidence, but everything had changed. She had changed. Gone was the bright and happy child who led her friends in adventures and went out of her way to use her magic for others. She didn’t use her magic at all, terrified of what it could become. Even with her caution, things escalated. The fall harvest rotted on the vines. Foraging and hunting became equally frustrating as the clan’s resources seemed to dry up out of nowhere. Nyx watched in mute horror as those around her began to fall ill. With the first death, she ran, never to see her home again.

Wherever Nyx went, calamity followed. Plagues of fever, swarms of locusts, heightened tensions and even outright battles in her wake. Soon she all but withdrew entirely, miserable and alone. She feared her own shadow, sure it would be another dragon, her next victim. She should have told someone. She should have gotten help while she still could. Now the curse was too strong. Now she couldn’t risk becoming that close to anyone. Defeated, Nyx called out for Death. What she got instead, was Riot.

Death’s living emissary, Riot was a dragon who had parted the Veil between the living and the dead and survived. He told her she was beautiful. She told him he was remarkable. She had never been so happy to speak to another dragon in her life. The two of them quickly fell into a routine, traveling together. She avoided populous areas while Riot went about his duties, always returning to her. In the meantime, her determination of old was renewed. He made her want to give life a try again. He made her want to be someone who could help others again. The witch that had ruined her life had also genuinely given her an extensive education in magic. She turned it on herself, beginning to learn how to break curses in the hopes that she might one day be able to break her own. For the time being, she could at least help others, if not herself.

With their combined talents, Riot and Nyx made their way through the world together, fiercely devoted to one another. Though she didn’t wish ill on anyone, Nyx was not opposed to using her knowledge of curses to protect Riot should he earn enemies, and he likewise was quick to defend her from those that would harm her due to the curse she now kept in check with his aid. Though they had each other, trust in others was difficult until they came to the Triumvirate’s clan with the blessing of the dragon Sanaz. It is here that Nyx continues to chip away at the curse that changed her life, for both better and worse, hoping that she might one day concoct the cure.
