Shayla has special adaptations to make her better suited for aquatic life. Her body is smooth and streamlined, her dense fur is far shorter than average, and when she grooms herself, she applies a waterproof oil all over her exterior. The result is an otter-like physique and improved swimming ability.

Seals and whales congregate in the waters bordering Southern Icefield, but most Gaolers could never imagine hunting them successfully. They are so large-bodied that it's hard for them to operate on a seafaring vessel, but they're too shaggy and bulky to swim after their prey.

Shayla can hold her breath for long stretches of time, and her dappled coat makes her surprisingly hard to see. She stakes out spots that seals and small whales frequent, then surges forward to capture one. Once she's made a kill, she drags it to shore to sell to other meat-eaters. After she accumulates enough profits, she returns home to the Empyreal clan and enjoys a break.
