"I found it!" Dart turned around. "You did?" "Yep!" "Nice job, Abigarrado! Someday you'll open up a shop like me! Bet you'd get tons of customers!" Abigarrado beamed. It was his dream to become a merchant like Dart. He struggled to pull the sword out of the rubble. "Need help?" "Yeah." Dart walked over, careful not to step on the little fae, and pulled out the sword. "This is a valuable one. Not many swords like this were made. Maybe we'll finally get enough treasure for food." Abigarrado sighed. They were always struggling with money. He often wondered if it was his fault- Dart never had an extra mouth to feed until Abigarrado showed up by the entrance of Dart's little cave with a soggy, unreadable note. He shook those thoughts away as he and Dart flew over to the cave. Thunder roared ahead as dark storm clouds formed in the sky. Little drops of water dropped from the clouds. "It's getting late, Abigarrado. We should get to bed right away. I suppose the shop can wait." "Good night Dart!" "Good night." They both fell asleep to the sound of pouring rain. Abigarrado woke up, stretching. "Wake up Dart!" Dart groaned and gor up. "Early, huh? You must be eager to start stocking the shop again." Abigarrado grinned. "Yep!" Dart tossed him some ants. "Eat up, and we can go." Abigarrado ate them as quick as possible, and darted over to the cave exit. Dart followed, watching his step and trying not to step on Abigarrado. After a bit of walking, they arrived at the shop. It was a dusty, messy tent-like thing with frames made of sticks, floor made of three types of planks, and walls and a roof made of a tarp and old cloth. Inside, there were various carvings, scrolls, and other trinkets stacked on makeshift shelves and abandoned tables. Needless to say, it was soaked in there. Dart spent the next hour wiping the floors and tables. Abigarrado organized all the trinkets and make them look more presentable. Finally, the shop was ready to be opened again. Dart turned a sign by the front of the shop to make the word "Open" visible. They'd just have to wait for customers. Few customers came by, as usual. Some would take a look and leave, some would smile, greet them, and buy a stack of parchment or a sculpture, but most would lay their gaze on the sword, interest sparkling in their eyes. "How much?" asked a spiral. "Is 50kt okay?" Another dragon, a pink and black fae, came over and scoffed. "50kt for this? This is far more valuable. Millions of treasure is the fairest it can get." Dragons who were watching gasped. This much? "I'll offer 500kt!" announced a snapper. "A million!" shouted a pearlcatcher. Soon, there was a crowd of dragons making offers, and the fae won the "auction" with a bid of a billion treasure. Shocked, Dart stared at the money. This had to be a dream. But as it faded to nighttime, he and Abigarrado- mostly he- hauled the heavy sacks of money to their cave. "Abigarrado, I owe you one." "R-really?" Abigarrado had always thought of himself as a weight Dart had to drag around. "I was- only repaying you for all the care you've given me." "Well, you did a great job, kid." Abigarrado beamed. From outside their cave, the pink and black fae stared at the two. She took out a sort of communication device- a walkie-talkie- and spoke into it. "This is Starchaser, reporting from the Windswept Plateau. The two are here. Are you planning to make the move?" A voice responded. "Remember, they're not criminals. You can just ask them to join the clan, no need to drag them there unconscious." |
