Orrin’s eyes had lost their color many years ago. Or did they ever have color? They could not remember a time when they were pure. Perhaps they never were. Perhaps they were born with the Shade running through their veins, sapping magic from their surroundings. Were they even born? They weren’t sure. Maybe they just came into creation, formed from some scraps of Shade. It didn’t matter to them how they came to be. All they cared about was continuing to be. Tendrils of darkness constantly swirled around them, hungry for its next meal. The Shade’s hunger was ceaseless, threatening to overtake his body if he did not oblige it and find some poor dragon to drain. He didn’t mind, of course. It was part of him and he was part of it. He fed the Shade and in return it granted him everlasting power and immortality. A symbiotic relationship between dragon and Shade. It wasn’t a bad way to live, he thought. With the reemergence of the Gaolers, they grew to be more cautious. While they could not be killed, they were not immune to capture. Of course, even Gaolers would likely keep their distance lest they be drained of their mana. Regardless, being captured would not end well for them, so they hunted less and less. They stayed primarily in the Tangled Wood where they could disappear into the shadows. He became something of a legend amongst dragons. A story. One told to hatchlings to encourage them to behave. Whether dragons believed in the stories depended. Most that did had some sort of experience with him, whether it was a friend who was drained or a member of their family. He found some sort of twisted enjoyment in listening in to these stories, hearing how they twisted him out to be. The stories varied in accuracy, some being rather close to his true nature, while others were vastly different. He was a celebrity of sorts and he loved it. |

It was as dark of a night as ever in the Tangled Wood when Orrin met him. A multitude of bright magenta eyes glowed within the darkness, a faint glow of opals cracked his skin. He was a Wildclaw, smaller than them, but he carried himself with such power that they dare not underestimate him. And the energy. The magical energy that emanated from the Wildclaw made them dizzy. They had never come across such powerful magic before. It would make for a filling meal. But something stopped them. They could feel magic pull at their mind and though they considered fighting it, they decided against it. It felt... nice. They liked it. With a smooth voice that made Orrin shudder, the Wildclaw introduced himself as Enigma. It fit, he thought. He fumbled over his own words as he attempted to introduce himself. Enigma was patient, and waited until Orrin had finally stuttered out his own name. Then, he smiled. His countless eyes glowed brighter and he moved closer to Orrin. Orrin’s breath hitched in his throat. It didn’t take long for Enigma to notice the Shade. Yet, no fear showed in his many eyes. Instead, his expression changed to one of interest. “You are touched by Shade?” Orrin frowned. Shade-touched… He never considered himself to be touched by the Shade. Instead, he considered himself to be a part of it. Not touched, but enveloped. “No. I am the Shade. It is a part of me.” Enigma circled around him, his magenta eyes scanning him up and down. “I see…” He took a step back and smiled once again. “You have power, I can feel it. A dragon like you would be welcome in The Forsaken. If you are interested.” It was an offer Orrin could not refuse. And so Orrin joined him. They changed their name to Entropy, to better fit their true nature. They were the void, a being of chaos and disorder. They were the Shade. |
