Astrolabe

In a far off corner of the Cosmographica lies a small system, consisting of a singular brightly burning star of aqueous mana, and a miraculous anomaly that leaves all who see it speechless; An asteroid belt consisting of enormous chunks of ice and rock, quite a few rivaling even small moons, all submerged in a monstrous interspacial ocean that swallows the whole of the belt, following its orbit like a Niven-esque ringworld made of water. No one who travels the Cosmographica has been able to find a cause for the phenomenon, but it has become a unique site for wanderers to flock to when making a hermitage.


Several centuries ago, two nearby constellations naturally linked up; A rare event in and of itself, but, the star that the interstellar ley-lines linked together through was the one which the astral ocean orbited, a truly unique combination of events and phenomena. However, not without consequence; The sudden induction of the system into a ley-line interfered with the natural majyks holding the ocean in place, and it began to destabilize.

Mages and scientists who had traveled to witness the event, realizing that the ocean could be destroyed in its entirety, losing both a home to many forms of unique indigenous life, and a natural wonder of the universe, started to ponder the issue, and came to a conclusion; They must channel the excess energy that was being pumped into the ocean and overloading it into something else, some kind of construct.

And so the scientists and mages joined together and began to manipulate the excess mana, channeling it into a spell, an ancient spell recovered from a time when the Cosmographica was young, one which had never been known to be cast before, for its energy requirements were so large, only an event like this could possibly fuel it. They knew not what it would do, only that it was the lone option they had to save the ring.

After an explosion of mana seen across the Cosmographica, the likes of which was seen only when the brightest of stars were born from the aether, there was her. Astrolabe. The very essence and mana of the system and ocean, its spirit, given draconic form.

She would declare herself the ruler and protector of the ocean, and, in the centuries since, her family have become one of the major forces for good and balance in the greater Cosmographica, though mostly they're only concerned with their home and keeping it stable and safe.
