Lore piece by ImagineIf

Aeolus had not always been the quiet guardian he had become. There had been a time when the winds had been his playground, when his wings carried him freely across the skies, gliding over oceans and through mountain ranges without a care for the storms he left behind. But that was before the weight of duty pressed down on him—before the world’s breath had become too dangerous to ignore.

He stood at the edge of Aeolia, the island he had created from the raw essence of wind itself. The winds had once roamed freely, a chaotic, untamed force that tore across the world, causing destruction in its wake. As one of the two Primordials of Wind, Aeolus had felt the need to bring balance—needed to carve out a place where the winds could be contained, where they could be tamed and calmed, for the sake of all living creatures. And so, Aeolia was born—a sanctuary where the wind could be controlled, where he could manage the currents and eddies of the world’s breath.

It was a lonely existence, but it was a necessary one.

Aeolus looked out over the vast expanse of the Windswept Plateau, the place that had once been a dangerous maelstrom of violent gusts and erratic storms. Now, it was a place of controlled turbulence, where the wind shifted and flowed as Aeolus saw fit, ensuring that the winds would never again sweep over the land in a destructive rage. He could feel the pulse of the atmosphere, every gust, every breeze, every storm brewing far off in distant corners of the world.

It was a responsibility he had taken upon himself, though it had come at a personal cost. The other Primordials, creatures of fire, water, and earth, could roam the world as they pleased, their powers immense yet not so tethered. But Aeolus was bound. Bound to the winds, bound to the island, bound to his duty. While the world around him shifted and grew, he remained an ever-present sentinel, ever watchful, ever waiting.

The wind howled through his lair, a constant reminder that he had never truly been free. Aeolus sighed softly. The thought of his twin, the other Primordial of Wind, crossed his mind. He had not seen her in ages—since the death of the elemental deities, in fact. She had vanished, leaving Aeolus alone to deal with the chaos of their shared domain.

The elemental energies had fractured after the fall of the deities. The air, the wind, had once been shared between two equal forces—Aeolus and his counterpart, a fierce and untamed dragon of the same element. She was the one who reveled in the freedom the winds brought, the one who played with the storms, who embraced the chaos. While Aeolus had always believed in structure, in the balance between calm and storm, she had loved the freedom of destruction, the power of untamed wind.

But now she was gone.

Aeolus had searched for her once, in the wake of the storms that had ravaged the world, but she had left no trace. Some said she had been consumed by the very storms they had fought to control. Others whispered that she had abandoned her duty, lost in the swirling chaos that still tore at the edges of the world. Aeolus didn’t believe the latter. His counterpart was too powerful to simply disappear without a trace, and he refused to believe that she had abandoned her role in the balance of their element.

But the days stretched on, and still, there was no sign of her.

A sudden gust of wind snapped Aeolus from his thoughts, carrying with it the sharp sting of salt from the distant sea. He inhaled deeply, drawing the wind into his lungs as if it were his very life force. The air had changed, subtly but noticeably. There was a shift in the atmosphere, a new pressure that seemed to call out to him.

He turned his head, gazing toward the horizon, where the dark clouds of a storm were gathering. But this was no ordinary storm. It was something else, something stronger. The winds were wild, chaotic—unnatural. The whispers of the world spoke of it: The Shade. They had returned with a vengeance, drawing from the energies of the long-dead deities. And now they were trying to take the wind for themselves.

The winds howled louder now, as if in response to the rising threat. Aeolus stood firm, wings unfurling as he prepared to face the storm. He had no choice but to take action. The winds were his domain, and he would not let them be taken by the forces of chaos again.

But even as he stood ready, he couldn’t help but wonder: Where was she? The second Primordial of Wind. Could she feel this too? Could she hear the call of the winds, as he did?

And if she was out there, would she return to face this threat with him, or had she abandoned the world entirely?

The winds carried the answer somewhere far away, a whisper in the storm that Aeolus could not quite reach. But in that moment, he knew one thing for certain. Whether she returned or not, the winds were his responsibility, and he would protect them—he would protect the world. Alone, if need be.

With a mighty roar, Aeolus spread his wings wide and let the wind carry him toward the approaching storm, his heart heavy with the weight of his duties, yet filled with the fiery resolve to never let the winds falter.
