"Hold my drink and watch this"
Hecate was hatched into a clan deep in the driftwood drag, or rather into a band of mercenaries. Her formative years were spent fighting among the other hatchlings and preparing for a life serving her leader. She was sure that her charge would be to an ally or familiar, just like her siblings and parents before her.‹━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━« Yet even as she came of age and had a mate of her own, with her little ones already crawling and playing, she had yet to find her charge. She had argued to herself that it wouldn't take too long to find one, that her journey would be a few months at best, that her mate would forgive her for leaving for a few weeks. And so she nuzzled her mate and children goodbye, and left to go find her lifes purpose. Those few weeks turned into months, however, and those months crept closer and closer to a year. She kept in touch with her family though letters and the rare visit, and she tried to ignore the look in Kalitis' eyes when their children barely seemed to recognize her. "Only a little while longer, I swear," she would promise, over and over, even as her own belief in those words faded. She was in the middle of a vibrant town in the Everbloom Garderns on her hatchlings second birthday, and she bought up every soft and adorable stuffed animal to send home to them, along with a long and heartfelt letter for her love. She didn't wait for a reply though, thinking that it would be a wonderful surprise to come home early from her search. She didn't really think twice when no courier found her at any rest stop of village, or that she hadn't heard from them for awhile before then. Everything seemed fine until she returned to where he clan once was, only to find the burnt remains of everything she knew. Hecate never talks about what happened after that, at least not to the townsfolk or the traders. Not about how she found her familiar or her new lair, or how and she and Kalitis seem to currently be close friends. No, she'd rather tell you about how she wooed Surya right out of a job in the Hewn City or the time she personally beat up a gang of imperials twice her size, or maybe to gloat about the piles and piles of plushies she has strewn around her nest. A word of advice that any friend of hers would tell a passerby though, would be to never bring up the names Mormo or Lamia. |
