EbiXXXXXPriestess of the Waves Guardian of Two Worlds The ocean likes to hide its treasures. Beneath roiling waves, deep in the murky depths, lay shining pearls and glowing coral. Schools of fish and cowrie shells. And the greatest treasure of them all, the unknown secrets of the deep. For the outsider looking in, it seems inscrutable, and unknowable. An alien dimension on earth. Yet, perhaps those below feel the same way. As a hatchling, Ebi watched the sunlight dancing on the waves above. They would flicker and shift, as they bent in the water below. As the day turned to night, those curious beams would shift in tone, from piercing rays to the dim purple-orange of sunset. Unlike the ever-glowing denizens of the deep, the light would change in its own cycle, seemingly dying, before coming to life again. Some stories she heard said even the light above pays penance to the power of the sea, drowning in the ocean before rising again. She would have searched for that brilliant light when it subsided beneath the waves, if she could. Alas, she was bound to seek something else. Those whose gaze pierced the deepest waters, whose birth was hailed as a blessing from the lost god, were sequestered away, in the tall, spiralling keep. Ebi learnt those lessons, of bending the water, and seeing all the treasures of the deep, to provide the blessings of the Tidelord in his absence. She was taught that it was her duty, her birthright. To abandon the search for their missing god would be to turn her back on him. Her teachers were not unkind. Yet she had no choice. Every day, when her duties were done, she would look upwards, back to the curiosities above the waves. Sometimes she would see something different. A shadow passing over, as something crossed above. A face, looking down. Though the waves distorted her vision, Ebi could sense that same wonderment, directed to the world below. She held a claw up, waving in the water. The face seemed to gasp, as their claws reached down, grasping hers. It was small, and its warmth radiated in the cold water. It laughed, as it splashed the waves, entertaining their new friend. She wanted to emerge from the water, see her friend with her own eyes, but a larger shape came, and pulled them away. It stared hard at the waves, daring the figure to emerge. Even through the water, she could hear the shouting, scolding her friend for leaning out. It seemed directed at her too, a scolding for breaching that wall of land and sea. Ebi quailed and swam down, avoiding the hostile gaze. Perhaps the worlds were not meant to intersect. When she finally came of age, she was freed from the Keep. She would perform her search for her sacred charge. Some of her fellows found it swiftly, be it over the Keep itself, their family, or the ideals of the Tidelord itself. Others took longer, selecting esoteric ruins and ships, sunk beneath the waves, or communion with the strange voices in the deep. But Ebi could not be satisfied. Wherever she swam, wherever she looked, the resonance in her heart was missing. The most beautiful reefs, murals of colour beneath the waves, the most thrilling and sacred sites of the Tidelord, and even her own home felt half-full. She scoured everything beneath the waves, but there was nothing. Many a night, she slept on ragged rocks and jagged cliffs, too ashamed to show her face in the keep. What kind of Guardian was she, if she had no charge? She paid her tribute to the ocean, her tears of inadequacy swept away by ocean currents, yet there was still nothing. For once in her life, she could make her own choice, yet the only choice open to her was failure. Only in the deepest dark did she see the light again. It grew in brightness, orange peeking through the rippling water. She remembered the wonder in the world above, both trepidation and curiosity. Her heart fluttered in her chest. She had nothing to lose. Gathering her courage, she braced her legs against the ocean floor, and launched herself towards the film of light above. She gasped as her head broke its surface, her lungs filling with the fresh air of the surface. In the distant horizon, she saw that brilliant treasure of the alien world for the first time, rising from the waves. She felt the sand in between her claws, as she swam to the shore. Beautiful palms of green, and the song of the flying creatures filled the air, as they woke from their slumber. Moored at a pier was a small wooden boat, bobbing up and down with the waves. Ebi breathed in the air, fresh with oxygen, yet carrying the familiar salty tang of home. Everything was an unknown, yet she felt no fear. Her spirit soared with elation, as she explored what the lands above had to offer. She tasted the bittersweet mangoes of the plants, and watched the swift rodents that hid in the trees. Occasionally, there might be voices, of those who came to look upon the roiling seas. Their language, though different, was strikingly familiar, to the tongues of those below. They too would see treasures in the world below, and wonder of the secrets it hid. Despite what her teachers had claimed, perhaps the worlds above and below were not so separate. Watching the waves ebb in and out, as they threw themselves upon the shore, Ebi realized her answer. In her heart, she felt the connection, the call both to the world above and below. She was not at home beneath the sea, but still an alien on the shore. Yet, she would learn of both. Here, where the waves crashed upon the land, and the land sank into the sea, was the world in between. A delicate balance of two alien worlds, seeking but struggling to understand each other. Fear and wonder, two sides of the same coin. That was her duty, to look over the balance, guard it, such that one day, the worlds may be together. Her fellows may call her traitor, for setting foot upon the land. The denizens of the land may call her alien, a fish out of her home of water. But those that look out on the water with wonderment understand her true nature: Guardian. |
