Biography
Born to a pair of sweetshop owners, he had never known a day when life was not filled with joy, laughter, and sweetness. His mother, though she could be a little grumpy, taught him all she knew of sweetsmaking, and his father taught him how to serve every customer as though they were the only ones in the store. Even on the days when the store was crowded with a gaggle of young amourous males trying to get the exact sweets to make their latest crush fall for them.
From his earliest memories, he could always sense what the customers wanted, even before they opened their mouths to ask. He tried closing his extra eyes when he was in the storefront, since he knew it made some dragons nervous. But it didn't do any good; and the more he resisted, the more he sensed his power growing. Now he could not only sense what his customers wanted, but what they needed. And his good heart, inherited from both his parents, meant that he wanted to fulfill that need.
He became entangled in a series of romantic relationships with young heartbroken females who entered the shop. Most of them eventually found peace serving a deity, as did their children, but he remained. His first love eventually returned to him, and somehow their lives became entwined again.
"This isn't good for you," his father said. "You can't help every lovelorn female that walks in the door; it's important that she helps you, too." He had never liked that Pearlcatcher; she always seemed manipulative to him. He was far from happy to see her hanging around the shop again.
Candydust smiled sadly. "But it's what they need, at the time."
This attitude was beginning to spill over into his work. He would change recipes, slipping in an extra ingredient at the last minute, and the customer would complain that their truffles were the wrong color, or that they had the wrong kind of powder on top. Never mind that if they actually ate the truffle, whatever need Candydust had sensed within them would either resolve itself or seem less important.
His mother, already a jealous guardian of her secret recipes, tried not to let her anger show toward her son. But it was hard. Her mate went to sit down with him one day, and found him in his room, packing.
"You know?"
"I have seen this coming for a long time, Dad. There really isn't room for three candymakers in this clan, anyway. I'll move on and find a new clan, one that doesn't have a candymaker, one that needs what I can give it. What Mom needs from me right now is for me to leave."
"I wish it didn't have to be this way, son."
"It's okay. Honest." He hugged his father. "Love you, Dad. And tell Mom...it's best if I don't make things any more awkward for her."
"I will. Be careful."
And so Candydust left the only home he had ever known, in search of a clan that not only did not have a resident candymaker, but also needed one. He would be searching for a long time. But he knew he would find one...eventually. He could see that.
