in the expanse of cloud-strewn ether
the stars in flight sparkle and shimmer falling to the earth where they leave rings on the mirrored lake of wish-filled dreams if you hold your hand out and linger the light of the moon trickles through your fingers but don't be fooled by what you hear. the stories are all lying. there is no wish-filled lake. your wishes will not be granted. there is only the star stealing siren, and this is the true story of the siren in the lake.
once, to a lake of listening fish
a little girl whispered a heartfelt wish to which the generous creatures replied "your words shall turn true and not be denied" to the lake she returned the following morn to wish for company to answer to lorn or so they thought before she knelt and three more pleas fell from her mouth they granted two requests without a word and as she paused before her third her greed blossomed like buds in spring shower and she said "i wish to be immortal forever" the girl was then cursed by the dwellers of the lake. they turned her legs into a great, scaly tail, but from the waist up, she would stay a human. to remind her of the weight of her wishes on her mortal being. yes, she would be immortal. but not the way one would think. "you will grant the wishes of everyone who comes to this lake," the creatures intoned. "but at the cost of your scales. your scales symbolise your lifetime. you will be immortal, so long as you have your scales. "but once you have given them all away, you will be nothing but a shell of a girl whose greed consumed her. you will be forgotten. you pay the price for your hunger." |
