  • “Now say you’re sorry,” the elder says as she places him in front of his clanmate. The children look at each other, and suddenly they are no longer children, but animals in the wild. Act on instinct, not on thought. Instinct tells him that he must kick.
The other child runs away screaming, and that is the end of that. Words take too long to say. And no, he isn’t sorry.
  • “This is the face of a hero,” the guide says, and he looks up at it. A sculpture, reverently crafted in ages past, staring down at him with the gravitas that only stone can manage. Noble. Wise. And oh, so smug. Hero they may have been, but the judgment of their stare cannot be borne! He topples the hero with a single kick.
A thunderous crash. Shards of marble upon the polished floor. A guide, aghast, screaming in outrage.
But for the moment, glorious retribution is his. He sets his foot almost lovingly upon the now-vacant pedestal before sending that, too, spinning out the window with another balletic kick.
  • Such a well-crafted argument. Every point shines with brilliance. He considers each one with the due respect it deserves, and demolishes the rebuttal with a single kick. Only one, a masterstroke, bang on the face. Elegant. Efficient.
—Also treasonous, apparently. He reflects upon this later as he languishes in the darkness, but wholly without regret, instead admiring the memory of his foot connecting with the Queen’s haughty face, again and again and again.
Later there is an explosion, and the guards rush in. The cell is empty, and the corridor as well, save for a splintered door with a footprint in the middle.
  • “GET BACK TO WORK!” the Stormcatcher thunders, descending in fury from the sky. His eyes shoot lightning and storm clouds boil around him, but the challenger stands unafraid.
“Never!” he yells back, and the deity snarls in reply. A bolt of lightning leaps from one claw and scorches the desert sand.
Smoke whirls around him. Was the upstart destroyed? And then the smoke eddies and the god sees a foot heading straight towards his face—
  • You have so many questions.
Surely some of those are lies. Whatever truth there was has been shined up so pretty, it’s become something else. Your delicate questions are cheerfully rebuffed, the answers brightly unsatisfying.
It’s time to break out the big guns. Time to smash with the hammer of truth...is what you’re thinking, but instead, you say a polite goodbye. The lies do not matter. Only the truth does—and the truth tells you that he can kick very well, and that his claws are long and sharp.
