Biography

The myth of Eros and Psyche is one of my favorites. Psyche was a princess known for her beauty. She was so beautiful that people began worshiping her instead of Aphrodite. This set Aphrodite off and she sent her son, Eros to make her fall in love with something ugly like a bull or something (I don’t want to talk about the Minotaur story right now or ever it’s just gross). But when Eros first lays eyes on the princess he sometimes just falls in love with her or he shoots himself in the foot with one of his arrows. Either way, he falls in love with her.

Now Psyche is beautiful, but nobody wants to like- talk to her. She is quite lonely, and a little jealous of her sisters, who are already married. Her parents go to the oracle to ask what they should do about it. The Oracle tells them that Psyche is to fall in love with a monster so powerful that even the gods fear it (‘cause you see not even the gods are immune to love ;D). So they take Psyche to a cliff by the sea and leave her there. Then the west wind, Zephyr whisks her away to this really nice house which is populated with invisible servants. She is told that she can never see him, that they can only meet in complete darkness.

So this goes on for a few weeks until her sisters come to visit her. They are jealous of her nice house and cool invisible servants. They tell Psyche that she must see her lover. They give her a knife so she could kill him just Incase he was an awful monster. That night she takes a candle to her lovers room to find the handsome god Eros. But the candle wax drips onto one of his arms. Eros wakes up and goes back to Olympus because ‘oh, betrayal’.

So now Aphrodite is now double mad at Psyche. She gives her three tasks as penance and that would make this even longer so I’ll just skip to the part where she ends up dead. At this point Eros isn’t mad at her anymore and Aphrodite is just keeping him locked up on Olympus. But he escapes just in time, fixes the Psyche being dead thing and takes her to Olympus to be properly married. Psyche is then given nectar and is turned into a goddess. They are married as equals and that’s it.
