Yooper, noun. Resident of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The term first arose in about the nineteen-seventies, and is derived from the initials "U.P." for Upper Peninsula. The term is so widespread that it is included in Merriam-Webster's dictionary. Yoopers refer to those from Michigan's Lower Peninsula as "trolls," because they live beneath the Mackinac Bridge, but this term has not spread as far.
