Biography
Lux was not born a fighter. Unlike his brothers and sisters who began their yearning for power the moment they stepped out of their eggs, Lux was a simple hatchling. He had curled himself into a small ball when the light of the moon first hit his newly cracked egg, and had opened his eyes for the first time when his impatient siblings had begun to peck at him.
Immediately the hatchlings jumped away, leaving a small semicircle around him, and Lux wondered what he’d just done.
Later that week, when everyone in the lair had seen him, and marveled at him - for what, Lux did not know - his mother took him into the clan hoard and produced the mirror. It was then Lux realized what made him so different - and why the hatchlings all feared him. Lux saw his eyes, not purple or blue or round, but the deepest black, and smoke-like, falling like water off a cliff. It looked ghastly and unnatural, and for a moment, he too feared himself.
Lux was different, and despite how his lair claimed that he was the same as any of the rest of them, Lux could see in the way they flinched when he came near, when the children of the lair played their games without him, or even the way his mother recoiled when she looked upon his face, as if he was some sort of cosmic punishment, that he did not belong.
So Lux grew up lonely. He was timid, more than a little scared, and very gentle, fearing that his existence was enough a burden to those around him.
And then the priest came. One of the Shadowbinder’s favorite, an old nocturne with dark scales, and a merry laugh, but most importantly, at least to Lux, shadow eyes just like his.
Over the next few months, Lux would stay by the priest. For the first time, he did not feel lonely. And the priest would tell him stories, amazing stories, about the other lairs in Sornieth where there were dragons just like him, and where he would be no anomaly. Lux felt his heart stir for a home where he could belong.
He left the night before the winter solstice, searching for a lair where he would be welcome. That is still what he wants, though he thinks he may just have found it.
