kiiltza is right there. he's right there and ardent can't reach him.
snow pelts ardent's face as he screams for him, fingers outstretched to the point of pain, but the bullets tearing through the other mans flesh drown out any noise ardent makes. the wind howls, whipping his grown-out hair into his burning eyes and dry mouth.
kiiltza's eyes are still trained on ardent, pure terror inscribed in every line etched into his face. ardent is not a medic. he doesn't need to be to assess what is happening and what the aftermath will be. if this were anyone else, he would have evacuated. he would have distressedly left.
but this is kiiltza.
ardent tries to claw his way to him through the snow, but then he's being dragged back, further from the bloody snow, from kiiltza, to what is supposed to be safety. it can never be safety without kiiltza.
we need to get him, ardent yells, terror making a home in his frantically beating heart. his eyes are wide, crazed with fear and adrenaline as he stares at ils. ils, we need to get him.
ils mouth is an exasperated partly-opened crescent as he pants, eyes darting from where they are hidden to the direction of the other soldiers shooting at them. it's over for him. ils says. you know that.
ardent can feel his heart crumpling impossibly further into itself, tumbling into the bottomless, freezing crevasse that has formed in his chest.
