Oh, Lumi, what a silly idea! Just forget about it, fluffball, you could hardly hurt a fly. The nagging voices of her clanmates whizzed through Lumi’s thoughts, and she almost misfired a spell. Barely the beginning of final exams, and she was already losing focus. Concentrate, she told herself. What good was it if she was imagining her bullies? Lumi’s proctor gave her a glance, then gave the signal to begin. An apple had been placed on a pedestal some twenty yards away, and Lumi was expected to knock it over. Daunting, not that she could let her nerves get to her. Lumi took a deep breath and readied her tome. She raised her arm and was about to cast an incantation when a tail flicked in front of her face, blocking her view. “Meow?” “Heeeey, Bibi! You know I am veeery busy right now, so you, little kitty,” she plucked him off her hat and gave him a playfully stern look, “need to stay niiice and quiet on my head, alright?” Lumi quickly turned to her proctor. “Sorry!” He only sighed in response. Lumi had gained a reputation for this furry companion, and all attempts to separate the two had been lost causes. The proctor dismissively waved his hand, and Bibi began to gently float in his direction. Lumi looked back at the apple. “Cadaret mortus!” A beam of light shot from her palm and careened for the pedestal. Lumi, the proctor, onlookers, and Bibi all held their breaths. Bzzzt! The ray glanced off the apple, and it rolled to the edge of the pedestal. It did not fall. Then wham! A blur of black, orange, and white scampered over, leaped atop the stand, and, with a smug look, nudged the apple over the edge. Lumi gaped at her proctor, then gaped at her cat, then whirled around and gaped at her classmates. She began to giggle, and let out a happy holler. It wasn’t long before she was embracing everyone in sight and squealing in glee. She had done it! She had- well, she hadn’t passed completely. There were still more exams ahead of her, more papers to write, but Lumi, and Bibi, were one step closer to proving themselves as a battle mage and a clever cat.
