in the endless breeze
calling out to me
is something so bright, it hurts my eyes
as i spread my wings
to fly towards it,
through the fog.
wherever “here” happened to be
has changed since I first stood
on the edge of that cliff
“here” travels with me,
I can never escape it
just as that bright object
can never escape its brightness
no matter how it pretends
it is dark or faded,
it has always been bright.
as I draw closer, I realize that it’s a kite
damn, I wish I was that kite.
so free, colorful, not faded the way I am
it floats,
with no control of where it’s going,
but it seems happy.
I reach out and grab the kite,
my wings still spread,
and touch it gently with one claw,
wanting to feel the way the colors
ripple through me.
the kite is torn instantly,
and just as it was ripped by me,
it is ripped from the sky
and falls back down to earth,
colorful tail trailing behind it.
it goes down like a firework.
a beautiful colorful firework,
except a silent one.
and then, it’s almost lost to the clouds.
I wonder if the wind will pick it up
and bring it somewhere,
or if it’s a bad day for wind
and the kite is just unlucky.
I lose sight of it as it swoops lower,
probably gone forever.
...damn, I wish I was that kite.
