When a hatchling was born with jet-black skin, he didn’t seem to be special at first. His skin had a golden sheen, as if it was drawing in the light, but it was nearly unnoticeable.
Then he opened his eyes and the gold formed runes along his sided and flowed into his wings.
Caele didn‘t grew up normal. The first time he noticed he was different was when he started a fight with a much older dragon who said: „I really don’t want to hurt you.“ The second time was when he won.
It set an example for the rest of his youth.
He never let a lie pass that was spoken with ill intentions.
He always won his fights.
He wasn’t well liked for it.
Everybody wanted to keep their secrets, and nobody liked a self-important young rowdy.
When Caele grew up and left to see the world, he didn’t leave much behind.
And he didn’t like what he found.
More and more ugly lies that he answered with more and more fights. He got a reputation of a invincible and determined fighter. It was said that he once flew high enough to catch the sunlight in his wings and that the runes at his side spelled truths for those who could read them.
He kept to himself, because there was a throuth to be found in his runes, and he didn’t always like it.

Mostly Caele liked his life of wandering around. He did not know how he got involved in a war. And when he won, as always, he did not know if he did the right thing.
He couldn’t remember what he had been fighting for, when all he could think of were the dragons he had killed. (He couldn’t help to think that it was wrong for him to win this fight so easily, when they had been willing to give so much for it.)
He hid.
He hid from the dragons who sought him out as a hero, fleeing high into the sky and to the loneliest places he knew.
And with far less success, he tried to hide from himself.
„It’s okay“, he said over and over. „It’s okay.“
While he lied to himself he avoided looking at his runes, unwilling to see the truth about him written there. So he didn’t notice at first that they began to fade.
The gold was drawn inwards, pooling at his belly, separate from him.

Sometimes he could hear lies as truth now, and it was a relief.
Finally, he could live a normal life.
