Biography
Asterion The Scientist |
Seperating yourself from an engaging conversation with Inamu, you continue down what you now know to be the armory hallway, only stopping when you reach another open door way. Peering inside, you find the room void of the fluroscent lights in the rest of the lair. Instead, it is dimly lit by a large flickering oil lantern, illuminating a mess of gears, nuts, bolts, and wires tossed haphazardly on a tarp. Just beyond that is what appears to be a gaping hole, from which metallic bangs and snarls of annoyance were emanating. Suddenly, a large guardian pokes his head up, bright white goggles glinting in the firelight. He pauses, staring at you in surprise. "W-whom? Why are you? Who are here? Wait, hold on, my tongue." The guardian pauses, taking a steady breath, then emerges fully from the hole. "Hello, I'm Asterion the scientist, and who may you be?" |
Origins
Asterion is the product of an egg lost to the sands of the Shifting Expanse, resulting in the guardian hatching and growing up without parents. Asterion was astoundingly unbothered by this, as he spent half his hatchlinghood simply exploring the sands and all they had to offer before he latched onto a nearby clan for shelter and survival. There, he learned the basics of hunting and survival, and found where his true passions lay: science. He followed the clan's resident electricians and scientists like a lost hound, querying them at any point he possibly could, devouring whatever verbal knowledge he could get his paws on. He stayed away from books, finding the words incredibly difficult to decipher, and instead focused his efforts on the slightly easier to understand spoken word. Unfortunately, as Asterion never learned to fluently read, he was often wandering into areas he wasn't allowed. The issue came to a head when Asterion wandered into the generator room and broke the electrical system, leading to the entire lair coming to a full-scale halt in both production and basic function. Asterion was mortified, and while his self-chosen mentors worked tirelessly to repair his damage, Asterion began to look into alternatives to electrical power. He developed mechanisms that ran on other fuel--oil, manual power, gravitational and physical properties--and attempted to implement them into the clan as a fail-safe for their lair. The clan told him plainly that he was not to mess with the electrical system anymore, and though they were kind and gentle about it, Asterion felt a pain in his heart. He left the clan, moving to the Galestorm Flyers, who were in-fact looking for an alternative to electricity, as they often worried about the effects of the dark magic sealed deep beneath their lair breaking their system. Asterion was welcomed with open arms and immediately set to developing schemas and implementing them, while the artists of the clan set about developing large pictographs Asterion could easily understand with a glance to guide him about the lair safely. Here, he resides, slowly working his way through the various electrical systems and developing alternatives throughout the lair. |
Personality
Like most scientists, Asterion is a bit of a quirky dragon. He often refuses to use electricity in his own room, citing the need to keep in the mechanical mindset rather than electrical, but is perfectly content with having an electrically bound golem as his companion. He dresses in wildly colorful and often loudly clanking steampunk attire, yet can be found grumbling about the noisiness of the resident mirror pack. He struggles to read and will often refuse to look at long texts, yet keeps stacks of books on his bookshelf, all of which are well cared for. No one quite knows whether these conflicting facts are simply results of random happenstance or if the Guardian simply doesn't realize his own hypocrisy. What can be easily documented is Asterion's speech patterns, which can all be traced back to his diagnosis of dyslexia. When talking without conscious thought, Asterion will find himself mixing words up, stumbling over pronunciations, and generally getting tongue-tied, much to his frustration. With more focused thought and a some fine motor skills, he can speak without problem, though he has cited how exhausting putting that much effort into speaking can be, so he often simply allows himself to mix his words up and clarify himself as needed. Additionally, Asterion struggles to read and is still only partially fluent in written common, and when he does need to read he does so slowly and with great caution. Of course, the Flyers try to mitigate his struggles. Large, clear pictographs are placed in key places around the lair to ease his navigation, and sign language was taught to help him communicate with more ease. Asterion is incredibly grateful for how far the Flyers are willing to go to assist him in his work, and he endlessly values his place among them. The only part of his life he is unsure about now is what his charge is; he has yet to fell the call for a Search, and as such is left wondering precisely what it will be.
