She was human, once.

And what a gods-cursed existence that was. All at once life dragged interminably and sped forward too quick; time wasted on petty squabbles and endless repetitive work. And yet, hints of things far more interesting - the brief glimmer of faerie lights at the edge of the woods, or tales from a few towns over of shapeshifting beasts who stalked the night, fierce and powerful. Stories of lives that brimmed with magic, with intrigue; creatures whose bodies did more than chop wood or haul water.

They struck out on their own, then, buoyed by the certainty that greater things awaited them. That thought carried them through months of fruitless searching, years spent chasing ever-more-fantastical leads. She held her head high when people scoffed at her mission. Yes, the tales were outlandish, but so many had that kernel of promise: these magical beings were human, once. Some of them, anyway. And by the gods, Sonnet would be one of them too.

How many of the creatures he missed on his journey, he'd never know - later he'd understand the stealth they carefully practiced, and that the first fey they knowingly met had let him see them. Out of curiosity, perhaps, or boredom - but finally Sonnet had the chance they'd sought to learn of magic, to become magical themself.

Fey strike a hard bargain, though. The clever being laughed at Sonnet's request for immortality, scoffed at the idea of her becoming a fey herself - but Sonnet was clever too, and negotiated for some "trifles". Little bits of magic, to help him spot the arcane, to understand it; a lock of the fey's hair for a keepsake. They parted with a kiss and a smile, both happy with what they'd gotten - though Sonnet was quite certain she was the happier of the two.

From there his journey went more easily. Sonnet searched, and found; learned, and began to apply. With each creature they met their knowledge grew, as did their store of keepsakes - or, as they began to think of them, components. Magic was a nebulous thing, yes, but these beings breathed it, bled it - and with a little bit of their bodies, Sonnet could mold hers to do the same. Over the years her enhancements and augmentations grew - vampires gave longevity, shapeshifters provided heightened senses, fey lent glamour, demons bestowed strength. On occasion he found others on similar paths, calling themselves witches and sorcerers, but none so advanced as he.

The only downside: she now attracted her own petitioners, eager for her knowledge and wisdom. With his own body and powers largely to his liking, he did have the time to entertain their requests. Their questions often gave him the opportunity to seek yet more knowledge - but that hardly meant he'd do it for free. And not for anything so paltry as currency, either. If the petitioner was a magical creature themself, then it was generally an easy - if uncomfortable - price to pay: she’d ask for some of their blood, or hair, or venom, or whatever else contained some of their power. If not, they'd be at the mercy of his whims - in one of his better moods, he might ask for something paltry but inconvenient, like a sprig of a certain flower he’s taken a fancy to. In her worse moods, they could end up on a difficult or dangerous quest that took years if they returned at all.

No matter. If they returned, they returned, and Sonnet could afford to wait - after all, he was human once. But no longer.

XDUVHIRAT
jy1Vn8s.png
When Duvhirat first came to their door, he was a pitiful, starving creature - but with Sonnet's advice, he came into his own as a poised and powerful vampire. He comes by every so often, and though Sonnet still makes a point of demanding payment for her "services", those services now usually amount to "chatting over tea".
XZUMRI
jy1Vn8s.png
Yet another lost soul who tracked down Sonnet for help. Sonnet confirmed that she was cursed never to find rest, though she has no earthly clue why - an intriguing enough mystery to contemplate and research even without much in the way of payment.

XLONGEVITY
jy1Vn8s.png
Sonnet's experiments have granted them incredibly long life and fortitude. So far, they have survived oft-deadly illness and grave injury, though they continue to work on enhancing their vitality lest it ebbs away.

XCOTTAGE
jy1Vn8s.png
His cottage appears to be a cozy little place, nondescript and tidy - but when he opens the back door, it can lead into any number of different rooms, far larger than it appears from outside. It also helps protect much of her store of components, though she doesn't put all her eggs in that one basket, so to speak.
