As part of the NEMESIS's long term mission is to test new communication technologies, no one method is used to send reports to the governing body. NEMESIS set sail with a full compliment of laser equipment, radio transponders, and mechanical "homing pigeons" and for the first years of the mission all were used interchangeably. Currently, however, only the radio transmission is in use. The laser was suspended for security reasons and the few remaining pigeons are reserved in case of emergency.

Microfiche is both communications officer and communications equipment. She and Dublincore work together in poring over the collected data and deciding which are priority to send back, but in the end Microfiche has the final say, something that rankles the guardian of data to no end.

In all the time she's been sending data back, Microfiche has never gotten a reply. That isn't unexpected; anyone on the continent contacting the ship is strictly against mission protocols, only to be done in a time of utmost emergency. Still, she sometimes likes to sit by the never-used receiver and wonders how it would sound to hear it crackle to life with an organic voice.
