Haanu's arrival into the Southern Ice Field was involuntary. While traveling with her Bogsneak companion, Hemera, a strong gust of wind from the Windswept Plateau sent them careening towards the ice-capped wilderness. Haanu was injured upon crashing into the ground and was unable to lift off again, so they were stuck on the island. Aoki's clan found them and gave them space in their lair to rest and heal, but by the time Haanu had healed up and could fly again, she no longer wished to travel anymore. The clan welcomed them as official members of their family, and soon they'd found friendship with Jet, the Imperial that would soon become their mentor.

While Hemera and she are similar in many ways, their personalities differ as well. Haanu is more or less the social one of the two, despite her species' innate loathing of company, and often keeps other dragons wondering whether or not to be afraid of her dark sense of humor or captivated by her knowledge.
