C A S S A N D R A distrustful • clairvoyant • intelligent «- - - - - - - - - - - - - ❖ - - - - - - - - - - - - -» Her first memory is blood. The overpowering smell and the red of it on her scales, horrifying and warm, sticking to her mouth as she almost drowns in it. The escape through the sparse trees of their border land, her wings useless and everything in her terrified and aching, seeking a refuge that might be impossible to find. She remembers travelling at night, growling and whining at every noise, because the unknown of darkness was always, always preferable to the vulnerability of her dark colours in the daylight. Cassandra can't recall most of the journey. She knows it must have been short - one, two days on the ground at the most. She wouldn't have survived, otherwise. Their domain had been small, a clan of few at the very edge of the Plague realm, right where the magic in the earth became stronger and more prominent. Her mother used to say that was why the visions had first came to her - a connection, a thread tying her to the Arcanist's powers from the womb, making her different from the moment she was born. She hadn't known what the nightmares meant. She hadn't known they were telling the truth. Nobody had known. The night terrors of a child weren't enough to move an entire clan from the land they had owned for generations, and neither were the warnings of her mother, still an outsider after years and years and years. Nobody had listened. They came in the night. They came for her, and yet slaughtered everyone they could find before looking for their den. Out of fear, out of hate. They had broken her wings, first. The pain had been unbearable and blinding, the dread nauseating. They had taken her mother. Her brown eyes, open and lifeless, watching her as she fled, are burned in her nights. She can't sleep without hearing the screams - so she doesn't, most times. It's not an uncommon sight, in this lair of lost children. She rarely is alone, wandering to the edges of the forest to let the moonlight shine down on her night-sky wings. They have healed, with time - the broken bones still hurt when rain is near, and thunder makes her whine low in her throat. But they have healed. It's a peaceful home she stumbled upon, just a baby drenched in the blood of her family, with the wide eyes of the cursed and the colours of death. She thought they'd kill her, at first - she was an ill omen, something to get rid of before it could infect the clean waters of their rivers. They had not. Instead, they had cleaned her and comforted her, words she could not understand but spoken so softly, calmly. There was no hate in those words, and there was no hate in the eyes of the dragons around her. There was horror and protection and outrage, but she only realised that much later. For the first time, she could see her future clearly, magic coursing freely through her veins, voices and concepts suddenly limpid. Years to go by, in that same place. And no more death, and no more blood. She was welcome. And so she stayed.
