AUK the Frozen Experiment

"A razor sharp egg crusted in hoarfrost. It is frigid and heavy, encasing a ferocious creature inside. A single crack is snaking its way across the shell..."
              53939176.png
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Dark... It was so dark. And cold. Very cold.

Her very first memory should have been the warmth of a parent, but instead, it was of a chill so cold it almost frosted over her little heart. She remembered clawing like a vicious little demon against the cell that kept her imprisoned against her freedom, yet even after her little claws started to bleed, she had been unable to break free with her meager attempts.

And so she knew what 'to suffer' meant at an age earlier than most. Whenever her captor would come to her chained form to check on her condition beneath the ice where she had been locked up, she would shrivel up and curl in the furthest corner of her cell.

From time to time, although her captor would give her food and some warmth when her heartbeat started to slow, it would still not heal that scar of agony in her heart. Especially when her captor started on his experiments, using all kinds of ice magic on her, watching her run around and about, yelping as the biting cold bit at her heels. With those cruel, cold eyes, colder than the ice Auk was forced to call home, her captor would watch her like he was watching a heartless owner beating its dog.

At one point, Auk remembered her scales being frozen and damaged by that ice magic so much that they started to slowly flake and fall off like dust. At first, she had thought that it was dust, until the itching pain upon her revealed reddened flesh showed that it wasn't dust. It was nothing else but her own scales. She had caught the worst form of frostbite, yet her captor didn't stop with his torturous methods. Until one day, Auk found out something horrifyingly fascinating changing upon her body.

Along those frostbitten wounds, lumps of crystalline ice started to form. At first, it was unnoticeable, but after Auk found that her wounds started to numb, she took a closer look and finally realized that that ice magic had done something to her body! And now clustering spikes of ice grew out in the places of those missing scales, replacing them and turning her into a monstrosity! In addition, after a more recent experiment gone wrong, her chest had started to freeze over and clear away to reveal ribs of ice caging a clear capsule of cryogenic liquid!

It was at that point where the changes were highly visible that her captor suddenly stopped coming. Still chained to the wall of her cell, Auk found everything to be highly serene. Because her chains were frozen to the wall, and she herself was still too weak, she was unable to break free.

Although she didn't know why her captor didn't come to give her food and make his rounds on his daily experiments on her, Auk found herself to be more relieved than worried at the prospect that she may have been abandoned to die alone in that godforsaken ice prison. But after all, thinking about it over again, seeing her state now, Auk found that compared to her captor, she really was just a mutated monster. Even if she was able to break free, where in the world would she go without being called 'Monster! Monster!' from all directions? She might as well stay here in this dark and cold cell, and wither away like all living things would in the passing of time.

Auk was saved.

Or to put it more accurately, someone found her after accidentally finding the location of her ice cell, and dragged her half dead form up to the world above the ice.

Although she was about as numb to pain as she was to the ice that had frozen and taken over half of her body in growth, Auk's physical body was still unable to endure two weeks without anything but ice and melted ice. That was after all the only source of 'food' left available to the starved pearlcatcher ever since her captor fled.

After the one who saved her brought her back to his cave, he tried to break her broken chains off her form completely, but it only resulted in himself almost getting turned into a solid block of ice.

When Auk found out that she was actually able to freeze someone completely over if they stayed near her for too long, she broke down and cried and cried until she had no more tears left to shed. But what was the use of crying anyways? Those droplets of tears were all frozen over into tiny pearls of ice even before they hit the ground, where they tinkled and shattered as a lasting reminder of her transformation.

The one that saved her was no one special, not anyone but a lone dragon living on the outskirts of civilization. The food that he brought back for Auk to feed her and bring her back to health were always fresh, but they were either seal flesh or something of that sort. Already cold from the journey back, the moment they landed at Auk's feet, they were already solid blocks of crunchy, fleshy ice.

At some point, that dragon also didn't return. When he left on a hunt and didn't return for two days and two nights, Auk forced herself to go out and find him. In the end, he was found, or to be more exact, his corpse was found, bloodied and frozen over as it drifted along the shorelines of the nearby ocean. Whatever creature he was trying to kill that time to bring back, it had been a lot more formidable than expected, and had left him with mortal wounds.

And so Auk was alone again. Knowing that she couldn't stay in that region, she made herself move on once more.

"Hey! Get that damn monster! She stole my meat again!"

"Catch her!"

Auk's heart thumped rapidly against her chest—Did she even have a heart? Yes, by the laws of magic, she did—and she spread her wings, gliding and diving over and beneath stalls, creating a mess behind her for her pursuers to clean up.

"Argh!!!"

She could hear them screaming and howling in anger as a mountain of crates came crashing down upon their heads. But she didn't look back, nor did she release that large chunk of meat frosting over in her jaws.

Suddenly, she crashed into another creature, and before she knew it, that chunk of meat dropped out of her mouth, while those behind quickly surrounded her.

"You damn rat, stealing from me again!"

"Beat her!"

"Teach her a lesson, one that she won't forget this time!"

Punch after kick after punch landed down on Auk, and she screeched and wailed, struggling against the onslaught of blows. But there were too many creatures, and her struggles started to weaken, until she gave up on blocking herself. It was tiring. Too tiring.

"Damn little ice monster!"

"Go back to the sewers, you ugly thief!"

"Yeah yeah...!"

The insults came right and left, until suddenly, Auk snapped. With a bellow and a hidden strength that she didn't know she had, she reared her injured form furiously. Slamming her claws down on the ground, spikes of ice erupted forth from the ground! They split and zigzagged, rushing toward her tormentors, stabbing into their bodies and sending them flying!

From around the pearlcatcher, an icy aura permeated with a blinding blue light! This aura rose higher and higher, condensing into a long, serpentine body, before a monstrous deer skull engraved with four demonic eye sockets appeared right above its ghostly 'neck'. That head twisted and turned, and an ethereal blue mist of frigid energy trailed in its wake. It seemed to check over its new form—its translucent body—, diving around Auk, slithering here and there, before it started to coil up behind her body.

With smoldering eye sockets that gleamed to life, the ghostly entity gave a silent howl in sync with its owner's rage, arching like a cobra ready to attack those that harmed her!

...

Auk trembled slightly as she tried to take a few steps forward. She didn't know what was going on. She didn't know what in the world that monstrous creature she had summoned was. She didn't know anything, and she didn't want to know. She just wanted to find a hole and curl up and rest.

Her terrified eyes filled with fatigue scanned the icy carnage around her, before she barely managed to haul her body to the outskirts of the town. Right as she was about to pass through the threshold and into the forestland beyond, she lurched to a stop, stumbled, and toppled over.

Although she was fading out of consciousness, Auk suddenly heard the rustling sound of hurried footsteps.

Through her blurred vision, the pearlcatcher caught the vague sight of a dragon rushing over to her. A claw rested on her slackened wings, and she tried to give the dragon a warning.

Too late.

The stranger leaped back in surprise, staring at the ice that had started to spread up the tips of his claws before the growth paused, and slowly melted away. He looked oddly at Auk for a few moments but by then, she had already lost all consciousness.

Auk awoke to the unfamiliar warmth of a brightly lit cave. She was laying upon a heavily feathered bed, and a little fire crackled in the middle within a pit.

"....Where?" she slowly asked, as though expecting an answer.

"You're in my cave." a quiet voice replied, scaring Auk to the point of directly shooting out of the nest.

"You've got quite the energy for someone who had depleted their magic just a day ago." the stranger from the day before held a large bowl of some kind of aromatic soup in his claws as he appeared beside Auk, "Since you've got the energy, eat some of this. It's freshly made."

Auk didn't move to take the bowl.

The stranger raised a brow, "What, you want me to feed you? Or do you think I poisoned the soup?"

Auk didn't reply.

"And now you're mute. Great." the stranger rolled his eyes in exasperation, but he didn't move away, instead directly prying Auk's claws open to shove the bowl into her grasp, "Don't think too much. If I poisoned your soup, what good would that do to me? After all, I had to drag you over two miles to get back here."

Auk stared down at that steaming hot soup. There were slices of vegetables and small chunks of meat floating within, and along with the warm and light scent, the entire thing looked highly enticing. But she didn't drink it, and only stared at the bowl with wide eyes.

"Hn." the stranger spoke up again, shaking his head, "I brought back a little fool into my cave. How unlucky." Although he said that, he didn't hold any intentions of kicking her out. Instead, he proceeded to turn and leave, throwing the following words behind him, "Eat up and heal up! You better be done drinking that when I return!"

Auk was left alone in that cave, but much to her surprise, even after all this time, that bowl of soup was still piping hot. It didn't frost over. In fact, only the outer layer of the bowl had turned to ice, yet the inner part was completely unscathed... As though the stranger had done some sort of magic to it...

Auk downed the soup in a few famished gulps. When that scalding hot liquid entered her stomach, tears immediately started to stream down the sides of her face.

"Warm... It's so... warm..." she muttered over and over again for no one to hear but herself, "It's warm..."

Ever since her birth, warmth had never been a word in her dictionary. It was either cold or colder. Even the summers she spent within a frozen land such as this had never been too warm. Just cool. And this was the first feeling of warmth she had ever felt since her hatching day. Auk felt... She didn't know how she felt. She only knew that this simple bowl of soup was warm, and it would be the starting point of a brighter future.

And just like that, the stranger returned moments later. There, within the cave right at the place where he had left Auk at, he found that little pearlcatcher holding her bowl, muttering and crying quietly to herself.

'It's warm.'

Lore ideas I have so far are little:
- Born in captivity (to whom, idk yet) and kept in a cell deep under the ice as part of some test or experiment with ice magic
- eventually caught frostbite, ice began to grow over her (as a result of the magic), her chains froze to the walls and she was left to die after the tests proved to be a failure and the place was abandoned
- she's just a sad thing that doesn't know anything about the outside world and can't/doesn't defend herself because when she used to try, it resulted in punishment (but she'll fiercely defend whoever isn't an *** to her)
- She probably accidentally freezes almost anything she's around too long and it scares her
- her capsule liquid is cryogenic
- Cries when she tries warm food for the first time
- Auk is able to summon a monstrous, ghostly creature with the head being a deer skull with 4 eye sockets. It flows an ethereal blue and trails frigid blue 'mist' behind it as it floats. This is apparently one of the results of her experimentation, but no one is quite sure if that's the full truth.
