Biography
Brought into the clan because he amused Calabar, Ghanzi quickly won the position of her mate, though it gave him little social status among the other dragons. He's near the bottom of the pecking order among the mirror pack that has formed more-or-less within the clan, and he's not much more respected by the others, except a few gullible hatchlings. However, he remains proud of his victory in winning such a dragon as his mate, and refuses to let that be marred by the fact that they have recently parted ways; he walked away, he will tell anyone who asks, and he has nothing to be ashamed of.
It can't exactly be said that Ghanzi is a joker or a clown; even "snarky" is too mild a description. To put it frankly, he's cutting and rude. He doesn't speak much, and he doesn't speak well, but when he does open his mouth it's usually to show the sharp edge of his tongue. He really, really enjoys getting people flustered or, better yet, wound up. Crying, yelling, and physical attack are all good, to him. If he leaves someone alone, it's probably not out of kindness, it's because their reactions are less entertaining than someone else's. His only defense for this behavior is that he doesn't lie about people; he tells the truth as he sees it, and if that truth is cruel, how is that his fault? However, this in itself isn't entirely true, as he will happily flanderize other people's traits just to find fodder for his taunting. He'll do it to himself, as well. While he's immensely proud and self-satisfied, he blows that trait up even more by pretending that he thinks all the dragons who dislike him are "just jealous." He knows full well the real reason why they feel as they do, but being able to simultaneously dismiss their genuine feelings and puff himself up satisfies him much more than acknowledging the truth would. Besides, it makes Calabar laugh--and, even now, Ghanzi really, really enjoys the fact that he can make her laugh about behavior she righteously disapproves.
It's easy to think that he mated with Calabar for his pride's sake, and that's the perception he encourages, but Ghanzi actually, secretly, loves her very much. It's why he loves to make her laugh. He's also very proud of the children they have produced, whom he considers the best of the clan; he is, however, bitter that so many of them have been exalted without a chance to prove themselves in the mortal world, and that is ultimately one of the biggest issues that broke him and Calabar apart. There are few others in the clan that he's close to, due to his antagonistic behavior, but he gets along quite well with Zhukovka, who simply doesn't care what he says, and he has a sort of zig-zagging relationship with Kalavasos that goes from friendly to irritated to friendly again. Among the others, he gets along worst with Mbaiki, who is intensely jealous of him; that jealousy amuses him, so he works extra hard to rile her up. One might think he would quarrel with Damascus, but he conspicuously avoids the guardian, and only sneers when Damascus is mentioned.
