Gwaine is the slightly reckless tavern-loving and noble-hating knight of Camelot. He saved Arthur and Merlin's necks when they were undercover in a tavern, and ended up in Camelot to recover. His father was a knight who died in a mission for the king, leaving him with a hatred for all those in power. When he rescued Merlin from some thugs posing as knights, Uther missed the ruse and saw it a breach of code, banishing him from camelot.

Gwaine still traveled from place to place, visiting the taverns and getting into bar fights. He helped Arthur and Merlin again when Arthur set out on his quest to prove himself as a worthy prince and future king.

Later, during Camelot's darkest hour, he stood with Arthur with the other unofficial knights around the round table and pledged his loyalty to his king. Arthur made him an official knight for his bravery.

This led into Gwaine getting captured and having to fight in order to entertain Morgana multiple times. He never lost his nerve or his spirit.

When he and Percival were forced to be slaves, the Key to all Knowledge saved his life and looked after him.

Gwaine was also the closest friend to Merlin after Lancelot. Although he never discovered the truth about Merlin's magic, he remained a true and loyal friend to the end, even riding out with Merlin to the Crystal Cave before the great battle.

His only love attempt was on Gwen, but that died quickly. He also cared for a young woman he saved from a raided camp, but she betrayed him and used him simply for information to feed back to Morgana. She was discovered and put to death.

After the battle Arthur was mortally wounded and being taken care of by Merlin. In an attempt to deflect Morgana, Gwaine and Percival rode out together to meet her instead. Percival managed to stab her, but the High Priestess could be killed with no mortal blade. She captured both Gwaine and Percival and tied them up.
Gwaine would never give her the information she desired- the true location of Arthur. She tortured him to the brink of human tolerance with the mystical Nameth. Gwaine's cries of pain awoke Percival, who upon anger and worry broke his bonds and rushed to his old friend.
By then it was already too late. Gwaine's last choked words were, "I failed." Before he died. Percival mourned the death of yet another loyal knight of Camelot.

Rest in peace, Gwaine. May you have found a place where your soul is truly at rest.
