A festival in Eagle

The festival of Stag'egga is an annual worship for the god Altair and marks the new year in Eagle. It takes place at night on the night of the Honey Moon (a summer moon when the moon is at its largest as determined by astrologists) when all lights in Altair are to be extinguished save for special paper lanterns made especially for Stag'egga.

The lanterns may be any shape or color. Citizens of Altair write their names on the lanterns and a prayer on the face of the lantern for the coming year and en mass when the moon rises above the city release the lit lanterns into the air. In that the prayers of the masses join the lights of the stars above.

Originally only practiced in the capital, Altair, Stag'egga has become widely practiced across all of Eagle as a way to end the year and bring in the new one.

Before dark Stag'egga is usually preceded by a great street festival in which people come out to sing, dance, eat and make merry. As it grows dark the lights of the festival and buildings around are doused. It's considered blasphemy for any building beside a god's temple to have any lamps or light lit. The city is lit by the Stag lanterns instead. Usually, the head cleric (or headman/woman for smaller communities) dictates exactly when the Stag lanterns are allowed to fly free. In recent years priests have started doing it across Eagle since Malik became master of ceremony in Altair during Stag'egga.

Once the lanterns are no longer visible in the sky, indistinguishable from stars, Stag'egga is over. Lamps for anything other than to see where you're going on your way home are strictly prohibited.
