Lore
- eggs are buried (intentionally or not) and turned every day of the incubation period. this allows for minerals (and magics) to permeate the shell and the hatchling, creating the opal beneath their hide.
- incubation period is double the normal time to allow hardening of hatchling's skin and to allow for max permeation of essential minerals.
- if not cared for by dragons (buried and forgotten, abandoned nest, etc), earthshaker's magics (?) care for the eggs during the incubation period
- when they hatch, babies have a thick, rough hide (primary and secondary genes visible). as they grow, it molts, causing babies to itchy profusely. over time, the spots worn down most (by rubbing, scratching, or trauma to the hide) become polished and opalescent, revealing their tertiary gene.
