 Hudie was a sharp and witty journalist who traveled Sornieth to gather exclusive information for his paper. He was renowned for risking his life for whatever issue he chose to cover, and always getting the wildest stories published. However he caught a nearly fatal disease while researching in the Scarred Wasteland, and, though the dragons there managed to save his life, he was left with colourful scars across his skin. To his shock, his career took a plunge, and he realised how much he'd relied on his looks and charisma to get by.

After someone made a comment about his scarring and he started a fight with them (and then lost said fight) Hudie hired Fjarfil to protect him as he continued his career anonymously. Their bond when from professional, to personal, to romantic over time, and they're now inseparable in their travels.
