Once upon a time, the Warden may even have had a dragon he would have been happy to call a friend. They weren't that, of course, but more like two strangers bonding over an unfortunate situation.

It was not his intention to leave the dragon behind. The Master of the clan demanded payment and Basil II had none. He had only a skydancer hatchling that he had ferreted away. Even that was worthless, an insult in the eyes of the clan's Master.

When he made it back to his clan, he ordered a caravan of the finest wines and spices to be sent to Ice's clan. His journey took more than 3 months as winter set in with a fury and he realized he was too late when he arrived. The clan was nothing more than an abandoned hollow, perverted by fiends like permafrost impalers. Was his friend dead or alive? The newly-crowned king did not know.

So the Warden brought Ice into his clan and allowed him freedom among his subjects.

He does not need to justify himself to his subjects about why this dragon of non-noble blood is wandering around the halls of the palace, but he knows in his heart that he is doing what he can to atone for his sins.
