'Tap, tap, tap...' Within the Fortress of Ends, deep underground, that sound was dull and lazy. Its owner seemed to be highly bored as she tapped at the clusters of onyx before her feet.

The bars of the prison cell that contained the monstrosity under her watch quivered against its struggles behind her. Yet she didn't care at all. She knew that the evil creature would never escape, not under her watch. Because she was Orythia, a proud and fearless member of the Overseer Order.

"Rrrrr.... Rrruaaaahh...."

The monstrous abomination behind Orythia groaned and growled, wispy tendrils of inky shadows trailing off its terrifying form. It tried for the umpteenth time to reach a shadowy claw out from between the bars of the cage to grasp at the gaoler before it.

"...So annoying."

Without looking back, the gaoler's long tail seemed to crackle with electricity, and after it flicked against the tip of the monster's claws, webs of golden energy surged through those claws and up its limb.

The entire creature that had been so dark it couldn't been seen clearly within the shadowy depths of the prison just moments ago suddenly lit up. Golden branches crackled through its transparent form as it spasmed. Red eyes flashed with hatred at its gaoler, it endured the agony, allowing it to slowly pass before it laid limp within its cell. For a while, it wouldn't try and stir up anything—it wouldn't dare to until it had forgotten about the pain of being shocked like the many times before.

...

"Help! HELP!!"

"The Horrorbeast has escaped!"

"We need reinforcements!!!"

"What are you doing, still standing there like a fool for?! Get the h*ll over here and help us subdue this thing!!!"

That last part was directed toward Orythia. She stood with her feet rooted to the ground. She didn't move. She couldn't move. She was in shock.

It escaped. It had been under her watch, and it had actually managed to... escape. And it had become an even more horrific monster. These past few years, shocking it over and over again with electricity until it had become used to the pain of lightning rampaging through its body. These past few years, it had actually learned to absorb that energy, and mutated into an even more powerful Horrorbeast!

The skies darkened, contorting into a vortex of menacing storm clouds that overlooked the Fortress of Ends. That monstrous entity bellowed and smashed a shadowy talon down, and an explosion of black miasma fanned outwards following a shockwave of lightning.

All that were within range were swept off their feet, including Orythia. She felt herself going weightless for a few moments, and the world spun around her. It was only that split second that a sharp pain jabbed through the back of her head did she finally realize that she had been sent flying into one of the spires of the Fortress of Ends. But by then, it was too late, and a world of darkness even darker than that horrorbeast's hide encased her vision.

...

By the time Orythia awoke, she found that whatever wounds she had sustained had already dried of blood. Or to be more specific, the flesh had already been frozen over in a layer of frost.

Slowly stumbling to her feet, a headache forming, she peered around. What had been left behind by that horrorbeast's rampage was a grave land of devastation—gaolers lay dead left and right. But most importantly, that horrorbeast had disappeared.

Orythia was about to take a step forth, hoping to search for whatever survivor may be left. But she hadn't even taken a full step forth when her claws knocked against something hard in the snow. Peering down at it, her pupils shrunk.

A tiny little stone lay in the ground before her long talons. And upon that stone was the mark of the Overseer Order. But, that wasn't what made her heart rate suddenly speed up. Instead, it was that split in the middle of the stone.

It was like a bad omen. A nightmare. It seemed to be trying to tell her that her time as an Overseer was over.

Orythia stumbled back, but she then suddenly wildly sent a swipe out at the stone, and it went flying off to who knows where. Only after it disappeared from her sight did she calm, and she looked around. 'The Horrorbeast.' She thought, 'I need to capture it. Capture it...' These misfortunes that fell one after the other. They were all caused by her. Because so, she had to fix them.

And so she set off, wandering, traveling without a lead.

Who knew how many days had passed since she had last had the thought to eat or even rest? Even she herself didn't know, and Orythia only stopped after she physically couldn't continue on any longer.

Falling over with a thud, Orythia lay on her side, her breaths weak, her untended wounds having started to fester with infections. 'Help me. Help me.' She thought, and for the first time, she felt fear. The fear that she would die in this barren land of ice and be buried beneath the snow. That she would be alone and forgotten.

Yet no one helped her. There was no one in the first place. And so Orythia could only curse her bad luck and slowly fade out of consciousness.

....

"Hey, you." An unfriendly claw poked Orythia, digging into her thick fur and itching at her skin beneath.

Orythia frowned, but she didn't move. That claw poked her again.

"..."

And again.

"#!"

...And once more.

Orythia leaped up from her nest, ready to electrocute her offender to dea- Wait. Nest? She had clearly been dying to death in the middle of a field of snow, so where did this nest come from?

Blinking, looking at her surroundings, Orythia found that she was within a very unfamiliar cave. The one that had been poking her much to her annoyance was a female mirror whose appearance looked rather terrifying. This mirror hopped back a step or two, giving Orythia her space back.

Orythia didn't what to think of this creature donned in bird skulls.

"Ah, awake, finally!" It sounded delighted to see its patient up and already able to move about as it had done.

Orythia immediately asked, "Who are you? Where am I?"

The mirror spoke, "I am Vis. You have come to the lair of the Ysbraviar. Or should I say my clan members found you and brought you back..."

footnotes:
  • In her earlier years of service, she got badly mauled during a brutal attack of an escaped Horrorbeast. And, despite being able to contain it again, her body was so damaged that she needed a lot of her body parts modified or replaced by mechanics
  • Due to this, she is capable of wielding electrical abilities and magics to a limited extent, but has gotten quite eerily good at this new ability

  • Objective number one: find and kill the shadebeast that killed her and her brethren
  • To keep her body running, the fatally injured organs have been replaced with Frost Delver technology
  • Because of this, she's an exceptional digger, and often finds many of the gems and relics that can be sold for the clan's treasury to expand.
  • Secretly, any mentions of shade bring back traumatic memories and she's always taken aback when it's spoken of, mumbling to herself frantically that she'll be okay.
  • She's quick to blame herself and low-key loathes herself, especially for allowing the shadebeast to get away

She has nightmares about the horrorbeast escaping, well, at first those were the nightmares, now the nightmares are all about what if it finds this clan....
