It was never enough to quite make a Progenitor. Instead great pressure would build up both around and within until the elemental Essence snapped like a twig and it too would do what it was supposed to do; spontaneously create new life. But the things it would create were shadows of shadows of what a Progenitor could be.

Their parents were made this way. Drawn from Essence and hunted into this shape. No dragon likes to admit that things like them can breed. That they’re anything more than spontanious elemental creation. But they can, and they do. And they have gone out into the world to make their way and keep themselves fed on the dragons who’s form they’ve stolen.

Prime Hunters are what they call themselves. But as of late normal dragons have taken to calling them other things. Hunter Killers or Shade Touched. Because of more recent Beastclan acknowledgement a creature from their folklore has been used to name Prime Hunters. While rather safe from Prime Hunters they remind Beastclans of one of their most terrifying folk tales: vampires.
