Gale's Thoughts: Devei
Devei is a dragon made for the spotlight. He was born there, grew up there, and if the way his life is going is any indication, it wouldn't surprise me if he dropped dead there.
Despite technically having a residence here in Chiaroscuro, Devei is less of a tried and true clan member and more of a particularly beloved long-term guest. He's got living quarters set up in multiple clans across Sornieth, actually, but he's told me more than once that he spends more than double the time here than he does anywhere else, and that when he does inevitably stop making his journeys across the continent that he'll likely spend the rest of his life here (barring any sort of dramatic life circumstances, like finding a mate in another clan).
He's made a name for himself in the entertainment world for a number of different reasons: he's been a host for traveling theatre shows and concerts, written two best-selling novels, and most notably, acted in some of the most popular shows of the past three decades. It should be noted that unlike some of our other more musically-inclined friends here in the clan, however, Devei is not a singer (or a dancer, for that matter). He loves music (hence his tendency to host musical events), but he can't hold a tune or play a note on any instrument to save his life. He sticks to plays for the most part and has become a household name because of these roles in particular:
- The witty, roguishly good-looking scout, Carthan, from the play Night On the Silver Sea, a role which he played through the first three initial runs of the show, spanning over the course of almost six years
- Herroquin, a fabled hero from the classic story of the first skydancers of Sornieth, who he only played for one run because of the show's insistence on an entirely new cast for every new tour (he's widely considered to have been the best casting choice thus far for this particular role, however)
- And, possibly most importantly for his career, Lorim, the cast-off from a family of royals in the play Northward, who finds a new family in the wild country of the nature realm before inevitably being called back to take his father's place on the throne and having to tragically leave them behind for their own safety
Lorim is the only role I've ever had the privilege of seeing him play, and he deserves all the credit he's been given, I have to admit. I'm definitely not the best dragon in the clan to talk to if one wants a more in-depth look at what makes a performance a good one, but sometimes I forgot it was Devei up on that stage, and I think that counts for something.
When he's at home in Chiaroscuro, despite his wildly different lifestyle compared to most of us, for the most part he's pretty widely beloved, even among the residents who would prefer to be left alone. He can be a bit haughty and insensitive at times, but he rarely means any ill intent, so most of the time it's fairly easy to brush off his more hurtful comments. He's recently taken an interest in one of our newest residents, Cressida, and is probably the dragon who knows her the best so far. He claims she could write a fascinating novel about the life she's lived, and I have no idea if he's expressed this idea to her directly or if he's working up to it, but either way she seems content to indulge his pestering for now.
Devei is certainly one of Chiaroscuro's more prolific individuals, and quite honestly, I'm almost as happy with his fame as he is. It's nice to have some good publicity on our side, and it's even nicer that someone so well-traveled considers this one of his favorite places. Plus, sometimes I get free theatre tickets, so maybe I'll become a guru of the theatre world yet.
