Chai is the very definition of spoiled sweet. Like all of the rest of Zelena’s hatchlings, no one is quite sure where Chai came from, but they suspect Chai may be a lost prince - when he first arrived, he was draped in pearls and wore a tiny diadem upon his head. The pearls and crown have since been put away for safekeeping…somewhere (Zelena swears she put them around here somewhere, maybe in the cupboard?), but it made quite an impression on the hatchlings, who are convinced that Chai is royalty. |

Chai, however, doesn’t put much stock in that idea. Whatever was in his past, he’s here now with the other hatchlings, and he’s pretty sure he’s much happier with them than he could have ever been as a prince. He has friends here! Other hatchlings to play and explore with! He gets to run around and get dirty and chase birds and catch bugs and smear syrup on his face and then lick it off after! Princes don’t get to do stuff like that! So no, he’s quite happy with his current lot in life, thank you very much, no matter what the other potential royal hatchling, Esesse, might think or say about it. …though, he does kind of wonder about it, late at night after Zelena has tucked them all in and turned on their little crystal night light and sung them their lullaby. Everyone gets a little bit curious about their origins from time to time, and Chai is no exception. He wonders where he came from, and why he was abandoned. Did his birth parents love him? Or did they throw him away? Zelena is the best mother that any hatchling could ever ask for, and he wouldn’t give her up for the world, but sometimes he wishes he at least had some answers. He doesn’t know if any of the other hatchlings feel the same way - he’s too scared to even mention it in case Zelena overhears and thinks that he’s unhappy with her - but even if they didn’t surely they’d understand, wouldn’t they? The thoughts eat Chai up inside, and so he overcompensates by being as helpful and friendly as possible, and trying to keep busy. He can’t be worrying about his past if he’s too busy playing tag with the others, or helping Zelena carry bed linens, or patching up a fellow hatchling who fell and scraped their scales. The thoughts can’t fill his head if he’s mediating a squabble, or putting a stop to Eseese’s bullying. If he’s busy, he doesn’t have time to think about it. So he’s always busy, and always looking for new things to do. The other hatchlings look up to him as a natural leader as a result, because he’s the one always coming up with new ideas. Even Eseese will occasionally follow his lead, as much as the other hatchling hates to admit it. Zelena, of course, is thrilled to have a helper, and often gets him to do little tasks, which only enforces his role as the second-in-command of the hatchlings after Zelena herself. Chai doesn’t really mind the responsibility, he can handle it just fine. Leading almost comes naturally to him. The less he thinks about that, the better. |
