Biography

If you were to ask him what the most heartbreaking sound in the world was, he'd tell you of the song the morning birds sing.
He'd tell you how much it reminds him of Her.

The first time he heard it, he was entirely unaccustomed to it. In the small hours of the first dawn, before he was to be called away, at the very edges of his consciousness, he heard them. Warbling, energetic melodies for miles and miles, the fluttering of soft wings and the beating of tiny hearts- bird song was foreign to him. The stricken wail of the Loon, the cry of the mourning dove, the excited chirp of the finch. In his world, shrouded in darkness and silence and stillness, such things would be a death sentence to those unable to protect themselves from the ever lurking presence of predators hidden in the shadows,
and this moment, this beautiful, fleeting moment, was no more than a mistake on Her part.

And it made him so, terribly, envious.

So they fought.

He regrets every violent moment of it, the first Blood Moon, as it digs talons deep into his heart, and makes him dizzy with emotion when he recalls it, despite understanding the tragedy behind why he felt so compelled to hurt her in the first place. The peace of the morning, that new life, the known and the bright and the safe, it was something he never knew he wished for until he had his first taste of it. When he remembers it, the haze of blood, and pain, and fear, and anger on that first Day, he flinches as though struck, knowing that the cold and dangerous life he knew could never be the subject of Her envy, that She never would have thought to attempt to steal it from him, for why would she wish for such a burden?
From her eyes, he was no more than a monster.
She was only defending herself from him.
It hurts so much to remember.

His bitterness swept over many centuries, as he watched over the unforgiving world of the night, able to do nothing as predator hunted prey, as everything died and was eaten ad nauseam. He could see no beauty in his territory, and so, slowly, he found himself longing for Her company again. Even if he could not have what She did, he would see Her beautiful sky once more, and listen to the bird song in her company, if only for a short time. He felt himself growing softer around the edges, during their brief interactions, biting back sharp words that would previously have been venomously spat without second thought. Once returned to his night sky, he gazed upon its vast emptiness and thought to himself, very quietly, that it was the same colour as Her eyes.

It was bright- blindingly so, the sunlight, when She first allowed him to see the full span of Her glory, Her sparkling domain. Exhilarated, he flew as far as he could along the threshold of dawn, dashing full speed alongside lush forests and next to wide rivers, admiring deer and other animals as they frolicked and basked under the warm sun, and for the first time, they laughed together, for the first time, he saw Her smile.
It was breathtaking.

As he guided her along the quickly approaching darkness of dusk, the knot in his stomach tightened. She would finally see the misery he had been living in, the pain of the quiet stillness he was so unfairly victim to. Surely, She would wish to escape back into the safety of her sun-lit life, and never acknowledge him again afterwards. Surely, She would be disgusted, surely, surely...
while they perched on a cliff under a cloudless, star-speckled sky, She pointed out a cluster of stars that, when connected with lines, looked just like a rabbit,
and everything changed.

What had previously caused suffocating dread, seeing Her, feeling the sun-warmed, fresh breeze ruffle his feathers, listening to the sound of the birds, it couldn't come fast enough anymore. He memorised the map of stars above his domain, and spent days at a time drawing connections between them to make Her smile each time he pointed out a new one. He watched over all creatures, vulnerable in sleep, and guided them on their journey to the next life if they did not live to morning. He flew into the clouds and painted Aurora Borealis all across the night sky, praying there would be traces left for Her once She awoke. He left small gifts and offerings along the thresholds of their sky, dawn and dusk similarly decorated in wreaths of acorns, oyster shells lined with mother of pearl, four-leaf clovers, and small, precious stones. All for Her, everything he did, everything he would do, his very existence, it was all for Her.

Despite this, though, it would never bring them closer.

They would chase each other until the end of time, night gives way to dawn gives way to day gives way to dusk and to night once more. Separated by a thin line, a threshold so barely noticeable it may as well not have been there at all. Only during the Sacred Eclipse may they spend more than just mere moments in each others presence, though that too would last only minutes. In everything he saw Her, in the ripple of disturbed puddles, in the whisper of the leaves, in the broken, grieving howl of the wolf to the uncaring Moon up above. She would remain in his mind, his aching heart, his listless dreams, but still, there was nothing he could do to close the gap.

The side of the Moon that we are so familiar with, and fond of, is tidally locked to the Earth. Forced to look endlessly upon Her timeless beauty, but never will it come close enough to touch. Just like the Moon he bares on his skin, he will gaze upon Her majesty until the skies have dispersed and they are returned to the oblivion from whence they came. Until then, he will continue watching, admiring, missing Her.

and She will always be just out of reach.
