Biography

"I have travelled the world around at least twice. I should like to do it a few more times before the IceWarden calls me Home one final time."

"I didn't agree with the idea at first. It wasn't right, sending two very... delicate dragons along with letters and objects of great import all over Sornieth. It was one thing to trust the skinny waif alone, it was another to pair us together. Mother guide us, I thought perhaps it was a joke, but Garviel has never had a sense of humor that I could comprehend.

"They make a fine traveling companion after all. I have grown very fond of them, and we have seen so much of the World together since our first assignment. I may be the 'Courier's Light', but Xanthus has guided me through these lands. We have not reached a place yet that Xan here hasn't put claw to! Such a worldly little fellow."

Xanthus is the youngest offspring of a wealthy sire and his mate, worldly dragons who travelled across Sornieth on their own business. Their young would find their respective homes along the way, and for young Xanthus, he felt a strong connection to the territory in which he was born. When he was old enough, the small wildclaw left his parents' nomadic lifestyle behind for a calling that felt much larger than himself. Picking his was through the Viridian Labyrinth, his first true challenge made itself apparent when he reached the water's edge. His short wings would not carry him across to the mainland, and he could not swim.

With his knowledge of geography from his parents' various stories he reasoned the safest way to reach the other side of the World would begin in the Sunbeam Ruins. From there, he would either have to brave the desert wastelands of the Shifting Expanse perhaps the most daunting journey would be through the Ashfall Waste. Once again he would find himself at the water's edge and... he had almost talked himself out of the journey before it had begun.

He spent some time along the coast of his parents' Flight before he was met by an Imperial by the name of Tarik. He was one of the largest dragons Xanthus had ever known and he could recall feeling strong apprehension when the IceFallen recruiter approached him. Tarik had noted the wildclaw's element and asked him what a hatchling such as himself was doing so far from his homeland. Xanthus explained that, first and foremost he was not a hatchling, and more hesitantly that his parents were not native to the Sourthern Icefields and he hardly remembered the nest that he had been hatched. The imperial was humble and apologized for his mistake, then proffered that should Xanthus wish to see his birth home he would be flying Southward the following week.

From this meeting, Xanthus had accepted not only safe passage to his destination, but so much more. During the week that Xanthus eagerly awaited their travels Tarik told him about his homeland and the Clan that he belonged to. He spun an august image of dragons who were both strong representatives of their element and devoted servants to their God's will that protected the land from Horrors of Old. It was beyond anything the young dragon had ever known, the closest comparison being that of legends and myths in scrolls and books from his parents' collection. He was inspired and awe-struck, his imagination ran rampant.

Tarik flew with the little wildclaw on his back for much of the journey, flanked by other recruits and travelers seeking safe passage. Xanthus commented on each landmark that he recognized along the way, entertaining and educating the imperial on things that even he did not know about the land he crossed so often in the name of IceFallen. It became apparent that the boy was something of a scholar when it came to geography despite being physically challenged when it came to actually reaching these destinations on his own. This knowledge did not go unrecognized when they arrived at the gates of IceFallen, escorted by enormous beasts; Gaoler dragons of the Sentry Order.

Each dragon here was dignified and dutiful, but like Tarik, they shared a familiarity with him that he had only felt with his parents before. After spending a few weeks in the presence of the Exalted IceFallen dragons, Xanthus was approached by yet another imperial; this one was much softer spoken that Tarik and carried an air of authority in his step. He offered Xanthus a handful of tasks that he could complete to help the dragons of IceFallen during his stay. Each subsequent task became something of a routine as Garviel; the soft spoken imperial, came to him more regularly with letters and scrolls to deliver here or there. Xanthus had never run so quickly and freely in his life. In return for his services, the other Exalted dragons taught him what they could about the history of this clan and about the Ice Element.

Months passed, and for the first time in his life he believed that he truly belonged. Garviel approached him again with a parcel and a note with a troubled look on his face. He seemed to hesitate, premising this task with a warning that its recipients were not among the Exalted dragons. Xanthus would have to leave the Exalted Den and cross blizzard haunted tundra to the fortress called the Frigid Penitentiary; the sacred home of the Gaoler Warden and their dangerous charge. If he could complete this task, he would be offered a permanent place among the IceFallen dragons. This task was not lightly given, and Xanthus understood that correspondence between the Exalted and the Wardens were not only top secret but often urgent.

Xanthus, filled with new purpose and loyalties that went deeper than any he had ever held sacred, would not fail them.
