Most dragons among the Shadeveil Sanctum were either born there or sought the clan out. Not Niflheim. Niflheim was invited personally to join the clan and fulfill a specific role—a role that his breed is uniquely renowned for carrying out.

The Shadeveil Sanctum needed a prison warden and not for a prison containing any ordinary prisoners. As a member of the Overseer Order of the overall Gaoler hierarchy, Niflheim was perfect for the job, and he accepted the position. He now watches over the Shadeveil Sanctum's Deep Reaches—the massive underground complex where the clan contains horrors of both draconic and nondraconic origin.

The clan's exploitation of said horrors is something Niflheim tolerates more than approves of, but what really gets to him is Tenebris and all things related to the Blackwallow. It's difficult for Niflheim to ignore the similarities between the “dragon” Tenebris and the Shade. But anytime he begins to have thoughts of defecting and bringing a force of other Gaolers to the Sanctum to contain Tenebris, Zarichaia is always there to help him refocus on the task at hand.

Were it not for the Sanctum, after all, those Emperors would still be free.
