Biography

Meet Geraniumuh5MgPj.gif
Mercenary, he/him

Fallout Streak Pinion Fun fact: Geranium has several "ticks"- little things he needs to do to feel comfortable. Clicking his claws, rustling his feathers in a certain way, and humming continuously are all things he does often.

When he and his sister were just hatchlings, Geranium's parents had a falling out. While his father and brother remained in the Crystalspine Reach, he and his mother returned to her home near the Focal Point.

Geranium's mother was a skilled mage and astronomer, as were all her peers. She spent her days engrossed in grueling work and unending study, made all the more difficult by the constant competition. She was so worried about the security of her position that she attempted to teach her son what she knew in case she needed him to take her place.

Though Geranium was an avid learner, and always eager to please his mother, he couldn't grasp magic. Day after day of practice did nothing to help, and as time passed, his mother grew more and more frustrated with him. Her love and kindness soured into disappointment and cruelty, only festering with every failed spell. Her demeanor turned harsh. On her stressful days, which were most, she would yell at and belittle him, even going as far as to scratch or hit him.

His mother's abuse only worsened as time went on, and Geranium struggled. He tried desperately to please her, but his efforts were never enough, and any small moments of kindness she gave him were undercut with beatings the next night.

One day, they received troubling correspondence- Geranium's father had succumbed to illness in the western peaks, leaving his sister, Silvermound, without a guardian. The young dragon was to be sent to live with Geranium and his mother on the Focal Point. Furious with the news, Geranium's mother took her anger out on her son, leaving deep, red scratches along his stomach.

Geranium already began to resent his sibling, bitter at what he had had to endue in her stead. He prepared to hate her as he and his mother waited for her to arrive.

The dragon that joined them was not at all like Geranium had imagined. She was lean and muscular, made strong from what must've been countless scuffles. Scars littered her back and limbs, but unlike Geranium's own, they were signs of wins, not losses. He hunched shamefully when he saw them, trying to hide his own still-healing cuts under his cloak.

Perhaps most surprisingly, Silvermound wasn't even a she, which he revealed after introducing himself. The young dragon's cool collection didn't falter as his estranged mother laughed in his face. Trying to emulate her, Geranium joined ensuite.

For the first few days, Geranium avoided Silvermound when he could, nervous about the new dragon. He had hoped that with the new presence, his mother would go a bit easier on him, maybe give him a break and take her anger out on his brother. Unfortunately for Geranium, she payed little mind to Silvermound, and continued to smack him around.

After one particularly bad night, Gernium encountered the other dragon while limping back to his den. He tried to intimidate Silvermound, hissing and humming angrily, but he crumpled as the pain flared. He fell unconscious, and awoke in his brother's den.

Silvermound had cleaned and dressed Geranium's wounds while he was asleep. He was in the process of wrapping the bandages when Geranium woke, and the injured Coatl burst into tears. It was the first time in years that someone had been so kind to Geranium, and he had forgotten how good it felt.

When the tears dried, the two began to talk. Silvermound told his brother of his life in the mountains with their father, of when he first learned how to tend to a wound. He admitted that before their father had died, he hadn't treated him much better than their mother, and had originally hoped things would be better with her.

Geranium told him about how his mother and he lived, of being a disappointment to her. Of not being able to learn magic and never doing things right enough. He loved his mother, but he was terrified of her and what she did to him. Then, Silvermound suggested something surprising- running away.

He reasoned that staying was dangerous, and the two of them might be better off if they left. Silvermound reminded his brother that he had beena traveler, and knew the surrounding land and its clans well. He even offered to teach Geranium to defend himself.

At first, running away was unthinkable for Geranium. He knew his mother loved him, deep down, and he didn't want to be ungrateful for everything he thought she'd done for him. What if him leaving just made things harder for her?

But if she had truly loved him, would she treat him the way she did? Silvermound was the first member of his family to listen to him, to treat him like a person, to care for him. That felt like love, not the things she did. By the morning, Geranium had come to a decision, and tentatively agreed. The two packed their things and left before the sun rose, never to return.

Decades passed, and the two brothers had become mercenaries. With Silvermound's lay-of-the-land knowledge and Geranium's memories of study, they made quite the team. Geranium learned to protect himself, to fight back instead of just taking whatever anyone threw at him, and found he had a natural talent for swords. The two traveled across the Isles, taking whatever jobs they could pick up and scavenging for resources. Eventually, they got a gig protecting sheep and shepherds alike for the Clergy of Unions.

Geranium is cheerfully naive, though incredibly intelligent. He has a deep and eccentric knowledge of astronomy, especially when it comes to meteorites and comets. He's sensitive to touch, and still deals with the aftermath of his abuse, but is thoroughly loved and supported by his brother.

Geranium has always been fascinated by rocks and crystals. He tries to find one from each new place he and his brother visit to add to his collection.
