“Why, my dear, would you ever doubt me? I always aim to unveil the truth”

Marik knew that there were rumours about him. The whispers echoed around the court, shifting like shadows until then reached receptive ears. He could practically hear them now, ringing in the nearly empty halls of the Astral Court. He didn’t mind though. Let them have their rumours. Or better yet, let their discomfort fester and grow with every tall tale. Marik didn’t mind if his reputation preceded him, especially if that reputation was dangerous. He stepped into the Throne Room of the Court and found the Queen reviewing a document with her lady-in-waiting. Both turned as he entered the room, the Queen’s expression staying ever-placid and the lady’s turning sour. “Marik,” the Queen said, her voice as soft as ever. He bowed, though not as low as decorum mandated. The Queen didn’t seem to notice, but the Lady’s scowl deepened. “My Queen, my Lady, I bring news from the stars and I’d like to the discuss a matter of the Bound Gods” his eyes skirted to the Lady, “with her Majesty in private if she permits.” The Queen’s expression was always hard to tell, but she never declined Marik’s requests for her time. She waved the Lady off with a gentle swish of a ribboned hand. The Lady looked like she might want to protest, but only bowed before leaving with one final glare at Marik. He smiled and stepped closer to the Imperial. “How do the stars speak today, your Highness?” She hummed, the sound oddly musical. “They scream ever-louder today. It’s as if the voice from the heavens in trying to rip open the sky. Tell me, Councillor, is this an auspicious sign?” He shifted where he stood, feeling satisfaction running through him. “Of course, my readings on the constellations tell me that the star songs are a great gift for listening to their decrees. It must be a reward for your work into calling down the Godling Brothers and their Keeper.” The Queen nodded, easily accepting the explanation, and Marik couldn't help a smile. It was coming together. After all those years of being tossed away and scorned for his magic, the fates were finally looking on him kindly. The Queen was listening to him without question. The Godling Brothers were in his claws. The spells were set and the constellations were turning into precision. Soon. Soon, he would challenge the stars and turn the Godling Brother Loki against his own kin. And once the brothers clashed, chaos would run wild and he could grasp the mantle of the Astral Court, raising a new kingdom of his own design. . . . Overhead, the heavens screamed in protest. |
