JAPANESE MYTHOLOGY
The Japanese myths are written down in the Kojiki and Nihonshoki, the oldest written records of Japan. They were commissioned by Temmu Tennō and his son Toneri-shinnō to glorify the court and to install the emperor (tennō) as a living god since he was the descendant of the sun-goddess Amaterasu. Further Yanagita Kunio recorded many folk legends, especially focussing on yōkai and heroic figures. The Japan myths are heavily influenced by China and Korea, in later times as well by European fairy tales like Grimms' Fairy Tales.
CREATION MYTH
Important Gods
At the beginning there was just a shapeless kind of matter, sunken in silence. But when the particles began to move. Silent sounds were emerging and the lightest particales rose up at the top of the universe, creating the light. The particles that were below the light formed the first clouds and the Heaven, Takamanohara. The heavier particles stayed at the bottom of the huge mass, creating the Earth.
When Takamanohara was formed, three gods appeared: Ame-no-minaka-nushi, Taka-mi-musubi and Kami-musubi. Without mating they produced seven generations of deities, the Kamiyo-nanayo, containing two genderless deities, and five pairs consisting of a male and a female deity: Uhijini and Suhijini, Tsunuguhi and Ikuguhi, Ōtonoji and Ōtonobe, Omodaru and Aya-kashiko-ne, Izanagi and Izanami.
The siblings Izanami and Izanagi then were using the Heavenly Jeweled Spear to stab into the primodial waters, creating the Japanese Archipelago with the falling drops of the spear. The siblings descend from heaven to watch the new land, building the pillar of heaven, making it their home. They wished to marry and mate but because Izanami dared to speak first, the first child of the siblings was Hiruko, the "leech-child". Scared and disgusted by their own child they put him into a boat, set him out to the sea. Having learned from this mistake during the marriage ceremony they mated again and received 14 deities which are personified islands. But they didn't stop creating more and more gods, until Izanami gave birth to Kagutsuchi, the god of fire. She was burned by her own child and died of the severe injury.
Izanagi lamented the death of his beloved sister-wife, who was the first person living in the underworld, Yomi. Izanagi decided to undertake a journey to Yomi, to see his sister-wife again. But Yomi was so dark, he was barely able to see her, begging her to return with him. Izanami replied that he was too late because she had already eaten the food of the underworld, making her part of the land of the dead. But Izanagi refused to leave Izanami in Yomi, even neglecting her wish that he should not look at her. When Izanagi saw her, her body was covered with thunder gods and her beautiful glance was all gone. Izanagi cried out in fear and started to run, being hunted by his sister-wife and the evil creatures of Yomi. He managed to get out of Yomi and closed the gate to the underworld with a huge boulder, to separate the world of the living and the world of the dead. Izanami was screaming: "My dear Lord and husband, if thou sayest so, I will strangle to death the people of the country which thou dost govern, a thousand in one day." but Izanagi only replied "My beloved younger sister, if thou sayest so, I will in one day cause to be born fifteen hundred."
Izanagi had to leave Yomi and his sister behind him. He went to a river, performing a ritualistic cleansing to purify himself from Yomi's evil. While cleaning himself Izanagi created three deities: 1) by washing his lefe eye he created Amaterasu, the sun goddess, 2) by washing his right eye he created Tsukuyomi, the moon god and 3) by washing his nose he created Susanoo, the storm god. Izanagi then gave his children different tasks: Amaterasu was said to be the new emperor of Takamanohara, Tsukuyomi should handle the night and Susanoo should take care of the sea and the world. But Susanoo cried and behaved like a defiant child, drying out rivers and forests which led to the dying on earth. Amaterasu scolded Susanoo, exiling him to the earth (land of reed-plains).

SOLAR MYTH

But before leaving Takamanohara Susanoo decided that he would like to say goodbye to his sister Amaterasu. So he ascended one last time, causing the earth to shake and crumble. Amaterasu was threatened by this happenings and prepared for a battle against her brother. But Susanoo was not there to fight with his sister and told her, that he will prove his peaceful purpose by making a contest with her: Who will get more children of a certain gender. So Amaterasu took the sword of his brother, breaking it in three pieces and washing them, before she chews them. Amaterasu then blows the accruing dust, creating three deities. Next was Susanoos turn: He took the jewels out of Amaterasus hair, washing them, before he also starts to chew them. Out of this dust he creates five deities. Amaterasu acknowledged her defeat - a big mistake as she should see. Susanoo erupted with joy, doing multiple mischiefs while celebrating his victory. He manipulated the rice paddies, clogged the channels, destroyed the dams and scattered excrements on the rice paddies. But the worst mischief of all was that he skinned a horse, threw it in the heavenly weaving hall of Amaterasu and accidently killed Wakahirume, a heavenly weaver of Amaterasu that was so scared of the dead horse that she stabbed herself with a weaving shuttle and died.
Amaterasu was horrified about what Susanoo had done and shut down herself in a cave, causing the sunlight vanshing from the world, leaving it in eternal darkness. All deities came together and discuss about how to lure Amaterasu out of her cave. So they decided to forge a sword, create jewels and cast a mirror, hanging all of them on a sakaki tree in front of the cave. Ame no Uzume then started an erotic dance, making the deities laughing. Amaterasu was curious: How could the deities laugh when she is not there? So Amaterasu opened the cave a tiny crack, causing the roosters crow. Ame no Tachikarao took his chance, moving the large bolder away and finally freeing the sun-goddess out of her cave. The sunlight came back and the world was saved.
After the return of Amaterasu Susanoo was finally exiled from Takamanohara, descending to the province of Izumo. There he met an old couple that told him about an eight headed monster, Yamata no Orochi, that forces a young girl as a sacrifice every year. They already lost seven daughters this way, only Kushinada-hime was left. But it was time to bring the next sacrifice to Yamata no Orochi. Susanoo liked the pretty girl, promising to kill the monster if he is allowed to marry Kushinada-hime after his victory. The old couple approved, so Susanoo started to work out a plan. He prepared eight barrels of sake, making every head of Yamata no Orochi drunk. The monster fell asleep and Susanoo chipped of his eight heads. This way Susanoo defeated the monster Yamata no Orochi and got married to the beautiful Kushinada-hime.

CREATION OF THE IMPERIAL LINE
Important Gods
A long time after these events Amaterasu decided that it's time to send a descendant of her own to rule over the earth. It was Amaterasus wish that her son Ame no Hoshiho-mimi will descend to earth but he rejected her wish, telling her, that he received a son, Ninigi. He suggested to send Ninigi in earth and after a short consideration Amaterasu approved. She gave her grandson a mirror, a sword, jewels and precious clothes, before Ninigi and his consorts descend on earth. These consorts were 1) Ame no Koyane, ancestor of the Nakatomi, 2) Ame no Futotama, ancestor of the Inbe, 3) Ame no Uzume, ancestor of the Sarume and the ritual dancers, 4) Ishikoridome, ancestor of the Muraji and mirror-makers, 5) Tamanoya, ancestor of the Muraji and jewel-makers. All together they were the chiefs of the five clans and the most important clan members of the imperial court.
On earth Ninigi met the beautiful Konohana-sakuya-bime. He fell in love with the pretty girl and asked her father if he could marry her. He approved but told him that he also has to marry Iwanaga-hime. But because Iwanaga-hime was a nasty girl Ninigi declined his requirement. The father got angry and cursed Ninigi that all his children will be mortal. This is the reason why the heavenly emperors are mortal until today.
Konoha-sakuya-bime gave birth to three sons: Hoderi (god of the bounty of the sea and fisherman), Hosuseri (ancestor of the Hayato) and Hoori (god of cereals and grain). Hoori got married with Toyotama-hime and the two of them conceived a son, Hiko Nagisatake Ugayafukiahezu. This boy was raised by his aunt Tamayori-hime, until he has grown up and decided to marry her. This couple conceived four children, one of them Jinmu, the future and legendary Emperor of Japan.
