History

Looking up, she found herself squinting into the sunlight. It was bright wherever she was - not that it wasn't bright from wherever she was from. The sunny comfort was familiar to her. It reminded her of home. Wait, where exactly was home, again? She was small, a few days old at best, and she was lost among towering stalks of bamboo. Memories were lost to her, but she knew she wasn't where she was supposed to be. In her hatchling confusion, Otehime began to wail.

Soon, her cries were answered with rustling of reeds, and then there was a warm, soft voice above her."Oh, dear, and what have we here?" A large hand lifted her gently from the earth, and her whimpering eased as the world came into view. Atop some great cliff, a great grassy highland stretched out for acres below her. Bamboo knocked together in the whistling breeze and far, far above, kites and balloons swayed in lazy ease among the clouds.

Carried to a clearer area, she was set upon a large flat rock, able to take a good look at her rescuer. Like a statuette, the Jade imperial lay next to her, scales shimmering and eyes twinkling with gentle amusement. "I am YaoZu. Where did you come from, little thing?"

She couldn't answer, because she didn't know.

"My son Sasha can't be much older than you, you know." Said YaoZu, carrying on through her silence. "His siblings have all gone to serve the Windsinger, and he's in need of a friend." Otehime looked up a little, curiously. YaoZu met her with smiling eyes. "You can stay with us, if you need a place to stay. We've got more than enough room."

Looking down to the pale rock below her paws, Otehime nodded, just a little. "Alright, then. I'll introduce you."

Since then, Otehime grew up in the chasm lair, alongside YaoZu's excitable son. When she was well settled, she'd been told she must've been born in the Sunbeam Ruins, due to her yellow eyes, but no one ever found out who left her there, or to what purpose. Otehime figured she must have been a throw away. Fodder for the Lightweaver. She'd been born rather plain, after all. While the others would try to assuage her doubts, it seemed harder to help Otehime out of her moods than others. Often she seemed to speak enviously of the sparkle to YaoZu and Sasha's hides, and their effortless grace. Throwing herself into needlework, she attempted to craft fine clothes for herself as a way to make up for her ordinariness.

YaoZu was as good of a parent as any, though prone to his own vanity, and so he gifted several scrolls to his dear foundling as a way to try and fuel her self esteem. It was magic. Poof, she wasn't plain any longer.

No, instead, dragons who came upon her 'Ooh'd' and 'Aa'd'. What a treasure she was, how stunning. Bold and bright and beautiful. Otehime was surprised to find how little she believed them. She would catch herself in mirrors, and then spend several moments preening and priming until she was happy with how she looked. It's a problem she continues to struggle with. Yaozu continues to spoil her at every opportunity, and she's grown quite close to Pele, as she finds the sleepy dragoness to be a great source of comfort.
