Vanargand was raised to guard the Frostfall Vault, to make sure the frozen abominations trapped within stayed just that- trapped and frozen. But then he started hearing whispers, soft indistinguishable words twisting around the pillars of ice. He ignored it of course, it was just a trick of the mind. Staying alone in the frozen vault for so long clearly made his ears react to the slightest shifting of snow, it was just the other Wardens. It kept happening. A soft crooning from the corpses, the words becoming clearer and sharper. Sometimes he could swear that their eyes were opened to watch him, tracking him as he patrolled the room. The corpses wanted to be released, they begged and battered. They promised him riches and power. They said they would give him freedom, true freedom, he would not have to spend his life here deep under the ice and snow guarding things long dead. Vanargand wished they would be silent more than anything. His clanmates were already starting to look at him strangely, he did not want to end up suspended as another frozen carcass. How long before his clan found out? How long before they would come for him? He was certain they were following him, watching for any hint that he was corrupted. He wasn’t corrupted though, the voices just needed to be quiet. Vanargand’s will is crumpling though, the whispers now trill directly in his head and they sound almost like his own thoughts. It is so very hard not to listen, to keep hidden. |
