In the beginning there was an egg, abandoned in a dead wasteland with none to care for it.
In the beginning there was an egg.
And then there was the harpy.

The story begins like this:
the abiding boneyard is a harsh place to name home, with no place for a hatchling.
The egg was tiny and the shell thin.
It was left.

The story goes like this:
the Plaguebringer's domain is unforgiving and no place for a harpy.
But this one was a scout and what is one life in comparison to the whole flock.
So there was a harpy.

The story ends like this:
first there was an egg, then there was a harpy and then there were a hatchling and a harpy.
There was life in a desolate plane and there was kindness were kindness was always dead.
There was a family.

Once...

____The harpy was used to flying for a long time, or sitting still for hours to no end until she deemed it safe to tell about what she had found. The raising of a dragon hatchling, she mused, was not so different from her old designation in the flock. Only that this particular dragon could and would move to the strangest places which always led to a panicky harpy. She had a new found respect for the chick-raisers in the flocks. Children, she had found, tended to shorten your lifespan tremendously.

____She had named the little dragon Shiva, the auspicious one, because which other name could she have chosen for something so small yet with such a larger than life will? Of course, this didn't stop the harpy from herding her new charge towards a, well, friendlier territory. Quite frankly, the harpy was done with the Plaguebringer and his lands. Other dragons and beasts may thrive in the harsh plane but the harpy missed her home atop the cliffs where Tidelord and Earthshaker had clashed many centuries ago.

____The first time it happened, one of the great thunderstorms was ravaging the plane, right were the Plaguebringer's territory ended and the dark trees of the Shadowbinder's wood started. They had been traveling for a long time now, the hatchling still going and the harpy was tired. She knew what lurked in the murky shadows of the forest but the Windsinger's domain would not have been a place for her charge and the path pointing the ways through the forest was easy to follow in the bright moonlight.

____Shiva had been running below her, always following the path winding between the trees while the harpy dodged the spindly branches grasping into the night sky. One second Shiva had been there. One second in which a great shadow had moved before her, halting her in her flight. Then it was gone and with it all traces of Shiva.

E M P T Y

____The harpy hung in the air for what felt like hours, frozen in a state of mind numbing terror for she knew that the hatchling could only be where the Shadowbinder had made her home. Shaking, she waited on a thick branch, her sharp eyes moving constantly around in hope of spotting the tiny body of the dragon she had won to protect. So she waited for there was nothing else she could do. She waited and hoped.

V O I D

____Time was impossible to tell, the sun never once arising over the tall trees, the whole forest shrouded in a never ending twilight. It could have been hours or days until the shadows started swirling, forming a vortex between dark roots. The harpy tensed, wings ready to carry her far away if the lurking mass in the inky dark proved malevolent. But instead one a small shape stumbled out into the gloomy night, steps uneven. With an anguished cry, the harpy whirled herself forward, wings cocooning the keening Shiva.

Afterwards Shiva was different, like something had been left behind in the Shadowbinder's domain, her eyes empty but knowing, a strange light dancing inside where a soul should have resided. The Lightweaver's domain was hurriedly crossed, the light paining Shiva and nearly blinding her until the harpy had found a skull left behind and gave it to her, the headdress still too big on her small head.

The harpy smelled the blood before she saw it, the Tidelord's sea stretching before her. Wailing she threw herself down over the body of an old friend, the other's eyes staring blindly into the sky. Her flock was gone and she was alone. A persistent tugging brought her back to reality, red eyes staring at her. And behind them the echo of her old family.

Shiva took as many bones with her as she could, stringing them together and dyeing them in blues. They moved further towards the sea and away from the cliffs where tragedy had befallen the flock until they were met with resistance. The foreign dragon before her was only a bit younger than her and already heavily scarred but his gaze was kind and he did not send them away.

And before the dancing waves the harpy and her not so little anymore charge finally found a new home. Their new family may have been a bit broken but it was still the best family they ever had. And so they can still be found wandering along the coastline and sometimes, when the night was the darkest and one only believed enough, well, then you might also spot the silent watchers atop the cliffs, wings dark from blood.

Continuing bio- harpy died dragon left and never returned. Shiver struck out on own and found azul also wandering looking for new home. Together they found the clan
