"Plants are the better dragons, and that’s a fact."

Carefully pinching the stem with his claw, Arthus removed the dead leaves. Tending to plants was like breathing to him...He knew when they needed water, when they needed dryness. He knew exactly where to cut them so that they would regrow bigger and healthier than before. He knew their sicknesses and parasites, how to support them and how to make them grow gorgeous blooms. Arthus sighed deeply and discarded the brown leaves. If only dragons were this easy to handle...

Cold. Calculating. Unapproachable… Arthus has heard them all. Long ago he has given up on trying to appeal to people. Instead, he simply says what he thinks, no filters attached. He lives with the conviction that only people that like him without him being extra kind to them are worth keeping around. All those he drives away with his prickly behavior he does not think about twice: They simply did not match… and why invest nerves and work into something that was doomed from the start?

Another defining character trait of Arthus is his perfectionism. There is no half-way, no almost perfect. Whatever he starts, he brings to a perfect end, or abandons it as soon as possible. Why bother with something that one would never feel content with? The only place Arthus accepts slight imperfections are in his beloved plants. He knows that nature is wild and sometimes illogical. Flowers are not necessarily perfectly symmetrical, sometimes a leaf has a different color from the others of the same bush. What first had annoyed him, Arthus now appreciated, loved even. With his plants is where he can allow himself to relax and just remain alone with his thoughts for some time, not having to worry about stepping on any important toes.

Background

Arthus was born as one of many children into a large family. He was a calm child, longing for solitude and to still his endless curiosity. As such, the large number of siblings both older and younger than him constantly caused him distress. While he was clever and studious, Arthus found little time to indulge in books and knowledge. There was always something to do, always some sibling to help and take care of. Suppressed in his wishes and goals, Arthus decided to leave his family in the middle of the night when he was still a child.

In the weeks following this rash decision, Arthus staggered between wanting to live his own life and hoping his family would come and look for him. He wanted to tell them why he had left, wanted them to understand his craving for more. But even though he stayed close to the clan for months, no one followed him. When fall started to set in, Arthus finally gathered his courage and left for good.

His path led him from one small village to the other, but nowhere he could quench his thirst for knowledge. But one day, by mere coincidence, he overheard a tale that a clan elder told his youngsters. The tale told him about an ancient dragon hidden away in a mountain range not far from where he was. This ancient dragon, only slightly younger than the deities themselves, held riches and treasures impossible to imagine. Immediately, Arthus' mind was set: He would find that dragon, but not for treasure and gold, but for the knowledge of ancient times.

And indeed, after a long and hard travel, threatening both body and mind, Arthus arrived at the ancient dragon’s cave. At first, the giant reptile wanted to kill Arthus for his invasion, but upon seeing that he was a mere child craving to still his curiosity, the dragon took him as his pupil. He taught him how to manipulate gravity itself, how to make things float and to create black holes in thin air. He told him how Sornieth was made, of the ancients that had roamed the earth, of all the wonders he had seen. The training was hard and the dragon strict, but Arthus did not give in. He considered the cave his home, and was more than content with his teacher.

Eventually, however, his teacher told him to leave. He had taught him all he knew and felt his lifespan slowly ending. Again, Arthus was without a home. Again, he started travelling, more aimless than before. In this state, he met Doroa and Tyrael. Upon seeing the guardian and the ancient, Arthus felt his curiosity awakening again after it had been silent for so long. He decided to travel with them, not knowing that the future had even greater plans for them.
