I shrank back. Despite my efforts, the many pieces of jewelry I had been forced into jangled. The sound was drowned out by the red one's yelling.
"-AND you know we're running out of plants! I'M NOT GOING HUNGRY BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT A SHINY DRAGON WAS GOING TO CHANGE OUR FORTUNE!"
"You're scaring her, Jace!"
"And what in the Arcanist's snake-tail made you-"
I glanced around, looking for a hiding place. The land was charred, ashes stirring in the wind, cracks scarring the world. No rock piles to hide in. The brush was impossible to hide behind. No escape.
"'It' is named Aurum!"
"It can die, for all I care!"
I looked at the cracks. I thought I might fit. I liked the idea of being alone in them more than staying here.
I scrambled for the nearest one, holding my pearl in my teeth. I heard cursing behind me over the jingling of jewelry. I managed to scramble down the crack.
As I descended, rough obsidian sliced open my back. I didn't feel the pain. I only knew when my fur was matted in it.
Still,I climbed downwards. Where else could I go?
