“. . . a softness came from the starlight and filled me full to the bone.”

The wine colored Rideback calls herself a collector, dabbling in the business of domesticating wild and exotic beasts. Though she is best described as eccentric, her 'collection' provides a sustainable source of dairy and meat products for the clan. Thus, she is regarded with great respect among the clan for her valuable trade.

Beast and dragon share an uncomfortably large mix of the same blood, much as the gods skirt the topic and the beings themselves confound the matter with myth, legend, and self-soothing “scientific” discoveries. Each are in a constant competition to outdo their biological cousins - from the largest imperial to the smallest bloodstone beetle - resulting in the landgrabs and wars that have plagued Sornieth for eons. Let not a shred of doubt be casted on the topic: it is all to stoke the two’s jealousies. In the background of this chaos, it takes a dragon of unclouded vision and heart alike to truly bridge the gap between themselves and the beasts whom they roam Sornieth alongside. And Venor can proudly count herself among those few, though you’d never hear her bragging to anything of the affect.

Venor’s story starts as most good stories do; knee-deep in the magical pitfall that exists between the borders of Arcane and Plague. With great swathes of ever-evolving illnesses self-mutating to achieve adaption over the great sources of magic spilling over from the Arcanist’s unwatchful eyes (as He Himself is far too focused on His precious stars for any concern for borderwork to be spared), life in this stretch of land is uniquely precarious. Dragons and beasts who call this place home learn a valuable lesson from a young age - work together or die alone.

This philosophy is not always to the benefit of borderland dragons, of course. Dragon and beast can team up for any variety of reasons, and not all of them have to be golden. Venor was born into one of the many worker quarries that spawn around that particular stretch of land; partly due to the uniqueness of the materials that form within its confines, and partly because of the ease of obtaining labor. A dragon beaten down by poor luck, harsh environment, and chronic illness only worsened by empty pockets is willing to do just about anything for a hard bed and a can of old food - Venor’s parents, Plague-dwellers themselves, bet on this fact when they first opened the quarry that Venor would call home for some time.

Yet workers at quarry were not only fellow dragons. Sickly kitsunes and disgraced Falonclaws took up positions at the camp as well, and filled the background of Venor’s upbringing with color - stories of lands long forgotten to dragons but never to them, songs unheard (or perhaps unwilling to be listened to) by other members of Venor’s species. And best yet, they did not simply exist in a vacuum, either. Even beasts who lacked such sophistications, largely animalistic over sentient - being that the category of beast is rather large and formed by dragons, who are inclined to believe all of their kind lack the capacity for critical thinking - found a place within the community as companions, or something akin to pets. Perhaps at the whim of their lower status as workers, dragon workers took these interactions to heart, contributing their own stories and cultures, creating something Venor would not take as unique until she later integrated herself within all-dragon clans. Against her parent’s wishes, and occasionally, their knowledge, Venor would sneak down to the quarryworker’s living quarters. Newer members avoided her, thinking that she was there to mock them, but older members recognized her childish intrigue as a purity, and entertained her.

The matter of how Venor left the quarry is something of a mystery - what about her isn’t? Some might be inclined to suggest given their current impression of her that she simply spirited away; taken away into the clouds by a crowd of eager faeries - the very same that now crown her head, whispering sweet nothings - impressed by her kindness. Some might see her as a liberator, who took swarms of beasts from the camps in a bloody revolution for freedom. Yet Venor was not the dragon clans have come to know in their current days: she was ignorant, and young, and certainly did not fully understand the historical struggle between derg and beast. Her motivation for leaving the quarry was simply self-motivated - a search for a better life.

...but if you must know, yes, faeries were technically involved in that matter as well. Venor, confident from her multiple successful ventures to the camp, began to haunt closer and closer to the edge of Arcane territory, otherwise known the realm of fairies. In exchange for a handful of favors for the faeries - mostly fresh bowls of cream, and soft ribbons, all of which was largely provided to her by the regular spoiling she endured under her parents - they agreed to make a big show of the whole ordeal, as to ensure that no worker would be blamed for her disappearance. One by one, an orchestra of faeries woke her parents from their beds and dragged them to her room - just in time to see her floated off into the night’s distance by hundreds of small, floating bodies. Again, a self-motivation, leaving.

Now, such thoughts are all that plague her. Not that anyone would know something to that effect - most of Venor’s background remains shrouded in mystery. She is mostly known now for her unusually strong bond with beasts, and her unusually childlike yet refined state of mind. Both such traits have heavy roots in her upbringing in little manners most would never recognize - her unwillingness to slaughter insentient beasts before they are ready to go for their meat is a testament to time spent alongside them within the quarry. They are not her only company within her clan’s den; often, injured or sick beasts without the capability to seek help from their own communities search out Venor for free room and board, often with the small price of helping out with menial tasks within her farm of animalistic beasts. The language with which she refers to her flock is largely unrecognized by dragon tongues, as it borrows from the beastclan’s own categorizations of “their” kind, and thus lends Venor somewhat of a dreamlike quality to the dragons who watch her daily work. It appears that she talks in fantastical, occasionally made-up words, but it is all borrowed from those whom she works alongside.

It is true that her work in her clan largely benefits the dragons there, who turn to her for sources of food - whether in the fruit of the labor of her beasts or within the beasts themselves - but Venor’s primary focus is largely at the benefit of beasts, in a sort of tribute to the selfish decision she made all of those years ago. She has considered returning to her birthplace, but this has not happened - yet.
