They told her she was born to fight, and like a fool, she believed them. From the moment her claws could support her weight, she was thrust into the battlefield. A gruff wolf watched over her, part dragon and part hell. He was not a good father, and he was not a good trainer, but under him, she grew. From his claws to hers, she learned. Her body was a weapon, and he taught her to use it. Mindless, endless fighting. But why? It came to her one day, licking the blood of a longneck from her claws. Why did she fight? Because she was told? Under what threat was this clan, watched over by gods? Was it the supplies, the spoils she brought back? Surely not, her mentor reveled more in the kill than the prize. But that wasn't her. It wasn't her. She realized that she wanted. The very act of wanting was foreign to her, for how long had she done what she was told, taken what was given to her? She wanted different. She had these skills to rend, and while it was all she knew, she also knew that there was more to life than killing to kill. She knew she could train, she could protect. She chose to set off when she reached her peak, to find a clan who needed her. She'd protect them. She'd condemn those who sought to harm. Who said the bodies that needed jailed needed to be alive. Fenrir never looked back when she told him she was leaving, but she heard his howl in the distance, the lone cry of a mournful wolf who'd lost his pup, when it was far too late for her to change her mind and turn around. |
